Resolved [bug] A weird loop where one of my own lords keeps challenging me to a fight

I was mid-siege and someone came to stop me, I told him to join my Kingdom instead and he happily obliged. Now he keeps telling me "Your highness, your luck has run out!" Leaving me with the standard conversation options for someone you are not at war with. I dismiss him, he says "yes, your highness", then I go back to the map screen and if I try to unpause or move he initiates the same sequence again. I am stuck in an infinite loop with my greatest frenemy.

I have tried making him join my army but his party size isn't big enough. Is my only option now to spend the influence to kick him out of the kingdom, then behead him? Would that even work, or does time need to pass for that to happen?

To reproduce:
Have someone turn up to stop you from building your siege tower/ram/whatever
Successfully convince him that he is honour bound to betray his kingdom
