History Of The Black Brunswickers
With the outbreak of war in the Spanish Peninsula in 1808 the Austrian Government believed that this was an opportune moment to resume hostilities with the French. On 25 February 1809 Duke Frederick Wilhelm agreed to raise a corps of infantry and cavalry to fight alongside the Austrians. The grieving Duke dressed his men in black, adopted the skull and cross bones as the hat badge. By virtue of the Black Uniform and grim hat badge, the Brunswick Army became known as the Black Band and its leader the ‘Black Duke’
