Brand new monitor, not working.

I recently bought a new pc, and a new monitor separately, a Samsung s22D300HY something or other. When trying to set up my new pc today, I plugged in the monitor using the HDMI cable and power supply etc. However on turning the pc on, nothing happens, the monitor is on but it keeps switching between modes HDMI and analogue. I've tried everything, using both display cables, fiddling with the monitor menu, and then I unplugged the power supply..and now it refuses to turn on regardless. I'm out of ideas, and I'd hate to have to buy ANOTHER brand new monitor. Help?

UPDATE: I'm an idiot..I was plugging the HDMI into the top panel instead of the GFX card slots...and then my power adapter or monitor shorted when I removed the power leads. New monitor time, also please lock.
