PLaying as the vaegirs and we were doing frighteningly well.  Were is the keyword. We had mortally wounded the Nords, having taken Tehlrog Castle, Alburg Castle and the cities of Wercheg and Tihr. Boyar Vuldrat just never let up on the campaign. It was truly great. I went from a lowly archer turned land lord to a respectable lord with 70 men horses and archers with a few mer swordsmen to guard the archers.

Then the Kherjits declared war on us. I was not afraid, Boyar Vuldrat are wise, powerful and brave Marshall would lead us to victory. I was around Reyvadin when I noticed the Kherjit horse arrive.  It wasn't a cohesive horde like one often sees, instead it was several different lords roaming at will across the lands around reyvadin, sacking towns at will. Surely someone will answer the call to save the kingdom.

No sooner do I think that I could use a hand dealing with the Kherjits do I get a summons to meet Vuldrat around Tihr. So I run across from Reyvadin to Tihr to meet up with Vuldrat passing looted village after looted village. I find him and he tells me we are going to go to Yruma castle in order to rally the lords. Now I look at his army and see why he would need support. He has 17 men. He moves faster than me. We run back to Yruma, I get to again see all the villages Kherjits have looted. I finally meet up with him just in time for him to tell me to scout some Kherjit cities which I do. Return to Yruma, and he isn't there. Find a lady to talk to and she says he is traveling to Tihr, Nords are attacking.

So I move onto Tihr, I pass the looted villages, then pass the bulk of the Vaegir armies following Vuldrat and then after a day past the armies, meet up with Vuldie himself.

Now that he has reached Tihr he notices he has no army and wants to move back to Wercheg to reasemble.

What was happening is the AI was thinkning like this.

I need to accomplish objective, in order to do that, must get men,  assemble army in random location, got army, lets go to objective, arrived ot objective, not enough men, assemble army in random location, got army, lets go to objective, arrived ot objective, not enough men, assemble army in random location, got army, lets go to objective, arrived ot objective, not enough men, assemble army in random location, got army, lets go to objective, arrived ot objective, not enough men, assemble army in random location, got army, lets go to objective, arrived ot objective, not enough men, assemble army in random location, got army, lets go to objective, arrived ot objective, not enough men, assemble army in random location, got army, lets go to objective, arrived ot objective, not enough men, assemble army in random location, got army, lets go to objective, arrived ot objective, not enough men,

Vuldrat, I hate you, and so does every village in the Vaegir Empire.

Wow...that's awesome....and a comedic epic story. Maybe you should try scheming with the other lords to get you elected as the next marshall....

The only problem is he is always doing the right thing. The objective is always either the defense of Tihr, or the defense of Nelag Castle (Yes the two farthest places under Vaegir control) or assembling the army. The AI sees it as a great idea.

And you are always co-opted into these ridiculous plans to defend Tihr and Nelag castle...only to watch the enemy lay waste to your homeland? Or is it up to you, brave adventurer, to singlehandedly turn back the Khergit Horde?

But I am scared! Mainly cause my army would get ripped to pieces. My horses would do fine but my archers would get run down real quickly. My army has been designed to fight against Nords, slowly walking Nords.

Get your footsoldiers to form a 3 deep line (stand closer x 5), and position your cavalry off to the side. The Khergits ride coursers, which have like 12 charge (which means they suck at knocking people over). The Khergits can't lance to save their lives anyway. So let them get mired in your footman pool, then charge them with your cavalry from the side or rear

Yeah, I am always overestimating cavalry charges. Played too much Native Expansion before Warband.

Well, let me tell you something else about Boyer Vuldrat, He is also a magician.
I was at Dhirim, and there he was asking to become my vassal. I accepted him into our Kingdom and turned around to a Lady standing right there, next to us.

I talked to the Lady and asked for the location of some of my Lords, before granting a fief; I usually get their opinion. By mistake I also asked her the whereabouts of Boyer Vuldrat; her answer amazed everybody in the room. She said " Boyer Vuldrat  is being held captive in Praven", she was so sure I couldn't believe my ears. So I turned around and there he was, standing right in front of me, at Dhirim.
(repeated the hole charade, just to make sure)

I travelled as fast as I could to Praven, and yes, yes, yes he was also held captive in Praven. I left him there.

I went back to Dhirim, and he was also still there. I got scared because Dhirim must be haunted, so I moved my court to another town.
Can You guess who was the first to relocate?  Yes, yes Boyer Vuldrat was the first to relocate, but he was also still in jail, in Praven

My conclusion: Warband does not have "magical items", it has "magical spells"

Immediately reported the bug to BugTracker with screenshots, and savegame.

Now that's awsome. I'm pretty sure he's using Ctrl+left click and just dicking with you...

In my case it was Haringoth who was a great marshall before he was defeated and left with 20 men. When he had an army he just gathered lords and we defended Swadia in the places where we should but after he lost battle and was left with 20 men he starts campaign runs from castle to castle, from city to city saying he's gathering lords and when there are several lords with us he end campaign without a reason and sadly without any fighting.

+1 to both of you, I'm laughing my ass off here.

Great story

However does this tell of a flaw in the Marshal AI? Does every Marshal in the game fall prey to this? I mean I will not mind the enemy marshal losing his will to fight but if it happens to my marshal its a different story.

The only solution for having marshall who don't lose his will to fight is becoming marshall yourself

How do we get to be appointed Marshal? Thanks.

Be nice to Lords in Your factions, i.e. do quests for them.
Win as many battles as You can and win tournaments, this will give You renown
Raise your Honor

That is how I got it.

Don't forget to ask your king who he thinks will be good for a marshall and tell him that you are interested
(don't remember how this dialog actualy looks)

No kidding, Vuldrat and Neldera are some really aggressive marshals. We've been taking towns and castles like crazy since Neldera got into power. I was offered Wercheg and I didn't even know we were sieging it. So I accepted and by the time I got my garrison moved from my castle on the ourskirts of the kingdom I saw that we've already taken Sargoth. I kind of hope they will chillout because I don't want to eliminate the Nord faction. (I think it's more interesting with more factions in the game)

It IS interesting how the Marshalls do seem to have personalities. I remember in my first game as Sarranids being disgusted with the Marshall (the Lord of the city deep in Sarranid territory) because he refused to ever move north of Jamiche Castle. After a few quests we switch Marshalls and suddenly we're taking Grunwalder and regularly sieging Veluca.

The Rhodoks I've seen similar stuff -- Marshalls who don't care that the enemy is advancing through our castles, and others who aren't content unless we've taken everything between Veluca and the deep desert!

Since I'm regularly restarting to test the other factions for my mod, I've yet to become Marshall myself or this wouldn't be a problem!
