Hi i wanted clarification on few of my doubts.
didnt want to make 3 or 4 threads so i put all my doubts in one thread

(1) has anybody seen a war bow in good condition cos all i see is bent or broken war bow also what is the damage stats for it.
(2)why cant i take the opponents horses after i win a skirmish i take particular care in sniping all their bloody knights and horseman and i dont hurt any of their horses yet in the inventory window after the war all i see is same crappy armor and a few swords.

Is the answer to both of the above " low level" ? i am currently at level 7.

BTW what do you guys prefer Bow or crossbow?

I finally found a regular War bow - damage is 25p - I have not found anything better yet.

I believe that the "loot" is somewhat randomized, and not at all dependent on whether you kill their horses or not. IIRC

(my primary, no-save, vanilla, character is a horse archer, and I like the regular bow - but crossbows do cause more damage...)

I am also a horse archer.I love the strong bow(damage 25), coupled with the bodkin arrows it gives the best bang for the money. If war bow's damage is only 25 then i am not going to bother looking for it
Thanks Deus Ex for the quick reply

Aaakk - my bad...

(I'm an old fart (tm) and my memory just isn't what it used to be *grin*)

I have a strong bow as well - IIRC I have not seen any regular war bows.

I just took a quick look at the python files, and war bow has speed rating 96, shooting speed 56 and does 26p damage.

Sorry for the mistake ~sigh~

The bow vs. crossbow debate: early game, the crossbow is really better. Even though it has a long reload, it does better damage early on and is much easier to aim.
If you're willing to put time into it though, the bow route is better. You'll have more ammunition, fire a hell of a lot faster, and eventually do more damage. Also your aim will improve enough as you get more skill that it will be about as good as a crossbow.

Pretty good bid to realism, as crossbowmen were traditionally much easier to train and just about anyone could use one. Trained bowmen were more effective, though they took a whole lot longer to train and not as many people had the skill to become proficient with the bow.

Later the Bow is not comparable with a crossbow anylonger...

Just aim anywhere near the head of a person and you will make a headshot!

But with most of the best crossbows and a horse you only get one shot, unless it's because i have no horse archery skill. Always says I can't reload crossbow on a horse.

I got one, but i cant use it yet.

I've seen regular bows several times, but usually they're broken or bent.
(How do you shoot with a broken bow, anyway?)

Because the last thing they do before going down is scuttle their horses

I like the crossbow. You can hold the reticule indefinitely without suffering ill effects to your aim, and they do more damage.

I do believe you may have just stumbled upon the answer as to WHY Marnid and Borcha are always plunking us with arrows...

ROTFLMAO

What happens in the battle generally doesn't affect the loot you get afterwards. In fact, you can dismount your horse in a battle, shoot it and still have the very same horse alive and well after battle.

Im not so sure about that.Ive seen many case of evidence in which the loot is in better shape IF i allow only my npcs to fight the enemy,vs if i fight also.

Every single time i dont join the fight, but only stand back (the combat option),the loot is in much better shape than it is in a similiar combat in which i lead (combat option).

Ah, but your party is in far worse shape. The balance is maintained

But that touches upon yet another question, though: Who keeps giving missile weapons to Borcha and Marnid?

Not I.

Give 'em a bow. Give 'em a horse. Issue the order Hold the ground. Borcha and Marnid disappear, once they are knocked out it's safe to charge.

Actually - most of the time I train them up in throwing pretty quickly.

I also usually give them horses too.

I almost always use Hold Position from a good spot of high ground in the beginning of battle - and if M or B are in my combat group, they take off and skirmish. Lately (last two games?) they have done quite well. Seldom get knocked out, and they manage to keep the opposing infantry busy - usually long enough for the rest of my troupe to take care of the opposing skirmishers.

Then they come trotting back, with a bunch of bad guys following along, and I start plunking the infantry with arrows.

Works pretty good.

OK first things first. The war bow at the moment is the best bow in the game. Secondly archery is a hell of alot better than Xbows. And thirdly NEVER and i mean Never give marnid or borcha bows they will kill you and your army instead of enemys they suck so much. I use only bows with my archer character so i have no back up wepons just a bow and 75 arrows and alot of backup arrows in the inventory.

well both marnid and borcha can become great archers if you are patient enough. (its best to keep them without horses until they have 5-6 horse archery and 200-300 archery though)

I gave both Narna and Borcha bows and increased their horse archery, power shot and weapon skills along with fast horses. I am doing just fine at 28th level and I think they are 14th and 21st respectively.

I have about 260 in crossbow and 4 in horse archery and use a light crossbow so I can reload while riding. I pick a high spot and pick off guys or trot around in circles so the polelarmed horseman can't get me and pick them off. Sometimes I tell my group (currently 45) to Hold Ground while I run up and take out as many as I can can while backing up and then Charge.
Different ways - all good. I just need to mix it up.
