So, skype chat set up for the game, added everybody I have on my contacts (still missing some I think). As usual, make sure important stuff gets put in the thread at some point, and try not to spam too much.

There's a few things we discussed today that warrants repeating:
Are there planes/bombers in the game? are they space worthy? can we put them in our ships?
Yes, yes, and yes. They are remotely controlled pre-sapient artificial intelligences, no pilots needed.
The remote connection can indeed be jammed, hacked, or otherwise interrupted. Carriers are thus not really a dominant combat force, but the drones are good for scouting and stuff like that.

Btw how does recruitment and getting more ships into the fleet work? Can I capture ships?
There is boarding and capturing of ships, though it'll be very hard to do. You can also make a deal with a colony and/or megacorp to build a ship for you (you may also get new equipment like new turrets if you have the slots and refits for new sensors n stuff in the same manner if they have an orbital drydock).
Strewn around the unexplored parts of the map, there may also be ancient abandoned ships that you can try to capture and use. Bring guns though.

was considering travel time for star galleons
Each turn is one Earth month. To cross a square on that map, any ship needs 2 days. To go diagonally, it will take 3 days (as it is a 50% longer distance in real-time).
So yes, in the space of one turn you can go just about anywhere, but going multiple locations in one turn may be difficult, and round trips won't necessarily be super quick.

are there lightsabers?
This wasn't a serious question but no, there aren't. There is melee combat, but it only occurs in limited occasions during boarding actions.

are there other ships we cannot start with?
Yes. The four ships that warlords can choose right from the beginning are the Star Sloop, Star Frigate, Heavy Star Frigate, and Star Galleon. Colony players start the game off with an old star galleon (like a century or two obsolete, parts may not necessarily be compatible with refits, etc.)
There are two tiers smaller than Star Sloop, and a further two larger than Star Galleon. The smallest ships are Star Cutters - these can be built and launched into orbit from the ground, and thus any colony can build them if they have the resources. The largest ships are Star Dreadnoughts, it's very unlikely that you'll see those around though.

Hello Everyone!

A quick word to our Megacorps as I'm didn't see it discussed by Pixel, but your starting strengths and weaknesses are tied to the corporations business practices and give you an advantage over the other Megacorps.  I don't want to give them away as they are to the advantage the the megacorps to be secret but like Soylent Foods Corporation might obviously have some kind of food advantage that the other Megacorps can't compete with at start.

If you want to change I suggest you do so before signup are over.

Also, in case anyone cares when picking a star system to start in. The color of the stars on the map do correspond to the color of the star in real life and two stars means a binary star system of course.

Warlord/Captain Rams and his fearsome vessel named the Horn.

Cool to see you playing, Rams.

Edit:
We need 5 more warlords and 5 more colonies before I set the ship/bio deadline and we can get started. So we're about halfway there. Not bad.
If possible I encourage you to get those ships and bios and names n **** done well ahead of time, the sooner I have all that the faster I can actually start the real game.

Unlike 40k the rules for Colonial Deputy's (planetary governors) names and backgrounds do not have be so rigid. So long as your guy has some leadership/management qualifications of some kind, they should be good to go. Everyone does get a background screening by the sponsor megacorp though.

Sounds kinda like Firefly.

Count me in. Colony of New Sol please, other info will come later.

After 3 more colonies have joined, thus meaning we have all 10, I'll share which Megacorp got which HQ (and thus which quadrant is "theirs" and thus what players are "theirs") and that could start a bit more pre-game diplomacy.

I've got a good idea of how I want my starship to be set up, but I'm still ironing out my character details and motivations. I should have the essentials sent to you soon, though.

Fo sho.

I greatly look forward to the first starship.

Need 3 more colony players. Warlords can wait somewhat longer as they are not as critical to the game - I need 10 colonies for balance reasons.

Would it be too much trouble to get a little info on my colony?  For example, it would be odd if my characters bio had his history as a specialist in mining, only to end up on a planet with organics as its main source of income.

If you PM me, I can tell you some vague info about your colony, if I've already started working on it. I just started yours.
Worth noting though - you can mine organics, too.

'Organics' just means that its an element or compound that plays a vital role to biology and can be metabolized. You could (hypothetically) mine carbon straight out of the ground and then process that into proteins and lipids and use that to sustain ('feed' would be generous) your people.

No, I'm pretty sure you meant using conventional mining tools such as pick-axes to butcher farm animals.

You literally said that.

Also that's probably a good feature-thing, food as a resource didn't really work in mine and hasn't really seemed to work out. Modeling economy ain't easy.
