Chapter XIX - Deathrun across the Swadia
Bold squealed as he felt pain in the head. Then he realised he woke up and fell off the bed. His blanket fell off the bed as well. Another nightmare... As he managed to stand up and put blanket on bed where it’s supposed to be, he saw light of last candle fade away.
Now, his room was completely dark. Bold wasn’t able to see anything. After bumping into wall several times, he was finally able to find the doors of his room. He quietly opened it, so he wouldn’t wake up the others. He walked on his fingers all the way downstairs until he came to bar. There were 3 persons sitting and drinking. Desmondes, Kushi and some unknown man.
Bold approached them and sat next to Desmondes.
’’You can’t sleep as well, huh?’’ – Desmondes asked with smile on his face ’’At least I couldn’t.’’
Bold said nothing and sat next to Desmondes. He raised his right fist and ordered himself a drink. Kushi was looking at Bold with worry in his eyes. Although Kushi’s face was almost always blank, it can be seen that he is worried now ’’Another nightmare, huh?’’
Bold sipped few a few drops of beer and turned his head to Kushi ’’Yes, another nightmare... This time about a battlefield...’’
’’It’s normal to have a nightmares about a battlefield..’’ – Desmondes suddenly started ’’At least, I had them every night when I first went to battle.’’
’’But my nightmares are about battlefield where my father, mother and my brothers get killed.’’ – Bold bursted ’’In every nightmare they’re killed by same man. In every single dream by the same man!’’
Waiter widened his eyes as he looked at angry Bold, who then stood up and accidentally spilled his beer on the floor. Kushi and Desmondes looked at each other and then stood up as well, trying to calm Bold down.
Bold just stood there, holding himself for his head. ’’He is terrorising me even in dreams!’’, said Bold and ran out of the inn.
’’Let’s go.’’, Kushi said to Desmondes and two warriors rushed after Bold. Waiter was just standing there, looking at them with his mouth opened. ’’Will you pay your beer?’’, he said then and realised that he was talking to himself. He just shook his head several times and continued cleaning bar.
Bold was running fastest he could. He passed many buildings, mostly taverns. He bumped into many people, both men and women.
When he got to the main street, he fell on his knees, without knowing what to do. Then he raised his look at the high, white moon.
He was just thoughtfully looking at the moon. Pictures of his family appeared in his head. Temudjin, his younger brother was always doing that when he was lonely. Bold’s white shirt was wet from sweat. His boots were muddy. They munched as Bold made steps.
Slow wind started to blow. Bold felt something. A danger.. The hair on his neck raised. He slowly turned around. When he turned around, he saw a wall, covered in shadow. And something in it. Something moved, moved towards him. Bold recoiled and placed hand on his waist, but sword was not there. He lowered his look and saw a boot emerging out of shadow.
Bold tried to put a blank mask on his face, but he couldn’t. He was afraid. A cloaked person emerged out of shadow. On the moonlight, Bold saw that sword refuses the light of the moon. It was shining in the dark.
At the other moment, assassin already swung his sword towards Bold, who was still afraid. When he realised, Bold barely had a time to dodge the attack, but not without wound. He jumped in side and rolled away from the assassin. When he got on his legs, assassin attacked again, with such a speed and skill.
This attack was even faster, and if he hadn’t moved backwards, Bold’s throat would probably be cut by now. Assassin didn’t gave him a time to recover, he attacked again swinging his sword with such a skill.
Bold dodged every attack, barely. When assassin swung his sword to cut Bold’s head off, Bold crouched and managed to punch the asssassin in the stomach. But assassin just stood there, like nothing happened. Bold widened his look and raised his eyes in hope to see who is the assassin. Because of darkness of the hood, he was unable to see the face.
‘’There he is!’’, Desmondes yelled as he fired and arrow in assassin’s direction. Assassin dodged arrow with ease and dissapeared in shadows. Meanwhile, Bold fell on his knee, panting heavily.
Desmondes and Kushi ran towards Bold. Kushi helped him to stand up ‘’Who is this?’’
Bold looked at Kushi ‘’I don’t know, Kushi. I was just standing here...’’, he couldn’t finish his sentence as he fell unconscious.
--
Bold slowly opened his eyes, but he got blinded by bright morning sunlight. His eyes opened again after few seconds. He could see normally now. He looked around himself. Forest.. They were traveling through the forest... He must’ve been sleeping on horse. His men were around him. Fifteen warriors rode around him, every single one of them was cautious.
Party slowly proceeded through the Iyindah forest. It is known as the residence of bandits known as ‘’Vagrants’’. Vagrants exist since the III century, at the time when Alexios Damodred united all of the Calradia and formed Second Calradic Empire. As for Vagrants, they were originally Alexios’ personal guard. Their leader was Ioannes Damodred, Alexios’ nephew. But Ioannes was arrogant. He wanted the throne of Calradia for himself. So he started rebellion in 256th year of the New Age. First few months, Ioannes and Vagrants were fugitives. There was only about 50 of them. Duke Marcelius of Haringoth sent mercenary parties many times to take Vagrants down. But mercenaries failed every single time. So Marcelius raised an army of 2000 men and went to fight Vagrants himself. Although Ioannes was arrogant, he was considered as savior of people, as he led Swadians into final victory against Sarranids in 254th alongside Alexios. That’s why he was able to persuade peasants to join him in rebellion.
This rebellion was known as ‘’Rebellion of Peasants’’ which lasted from 257th till 259th. Ioannes gathered around 7000 men and defeated Marcelius of Haringoth in the battle of Ibiran. Ioannes became renowned warlord in Calradia, but Alexios managed to defeat him in December of 259th. Ioannes was imprisoned and accused to execution. But, Ioannes managed to escape from Alexios and disappear in the Vaegir tundras.
There he started another rebellion two years later, which was known as ‘’The rebellion of Vaegirs’’. As the head of Vaegirs, Ioannes led 30000 of them to the fields of Suno, where he faced over 150000 Swadians. Rhodoks and Nords, who were allies of Swadia, came to the fields of Suno with 240000 of their soldiers. Now, they had over 400000 soldiers at their disposal against Ioannes’ 30000. Just before the start of battle, Jochi O’Ginn, Khan of Wolves came to help Ioannes with his 50000 riders, and now they had a little chance to defeat them. A big battle started. A battle that lasted about two months, and which resulted with victory of Ioannes and Jochi. This resulted with end of Second Calradic Empire in 264th. The Second Calradic Empire lasted only 10 years, which is much more than the First Calradic Empire, which lasted only 2 years.
This is the proof that it’s not that easy to unite all of Calradia, but it’s much harder to maintain the united Empire. Since the Ioannes’ victory, Alexios and his family moved out of Calradia, probably to Geroia. And since that battle, Damodreds rule the Kingdom of Vaeigrs, with Ioannes who is known as the first Prince of Vaegirs, who during his reign managed to rule all of tundra and expand to Wercheg peninsula and even to Sargoth and Dhirim castle. During reign of Ioannes, Dhirim wasn’t just an ordinary castle, but it became a big city which served as the residence of main Vaegir army, later Swadian. But after Ioannes’ death, a bounty was set on the members of Vagrant. So they escaped to the plain of Swadia, and since 3rd century, they’re hiding in forest of Iyindah. Swadians sent war parties to search for them so many times, but every time their armies will return with no informations about Vagrants.
Bold knew that very well, and decided that it will be good to form an alliance with Yaroglek if he wants to defeat Khergits. Vaegirs are still in feud with Swadians, and at war with Khergits. As he is the last O’Ginn and legitimate Khan of Wolves, Vaegirs may actually join him.
Who knows, maybe I decide to spare them in the future after I finish my conquest.., Bold thought to himself and smiled. Desmondes spotted Bold smiling and rode closer to Bold ‘’What’s so funny that made you laugh?’’
Bold looked at Desmondes, his bald head was shining on the morning sunlight ‘’Nothing, nothing at all…’’, he said and looked around himself. He was cautious, no one was around him, at least he couldn’t see the enemies. Then, all in sudden, someone jumped off the tree in front of the scout, who rode in front of all warriors. Column stopped when man jumped off the tree.
His armor was rather unusual. Man’s shoulders were covered by fur, under which was chainmail and a cloth over it. On the cloth, there was a sign of golden claw. A wolf’s head is used as the head armor. Stranger’s arms were covered by red tattoos of some unknown signs. Stranger had a big battleaxe on his back.
‘’The golden claw? This can’t be…’’ – Kushi widened his eyes when he spotted a crest on stranger’s chest. Then he wiped the sweat off his forehead.
Bold approached Kushi and asked him ‘’Who’s this? What about that golden claw?’’
Kushi turned his head to Bold and said ‘’We better escape, Bold. We stand no chance against them.’’
Bold frowned and pulled a sabre out of it’s sheath. He slowly moved his horse towards the stranger, who was really muscular ‘’I am not afraid of a single man.’’
‘’You fool! That man is a Vagrant!’’ – Kushi warned Bold who recklessly moved towards Vagrant.
‘’You spotted well, old man.’’ – someone said. Kushi turned his head and saw one more man standing behind them. Desmondes also widened his eyes and placed a hand on claymore on his back. Bold didn’t turned his head. He couldn’t take his eyes off the man standing in front of him.
Kushi cautiously looked at the man standing behind him. This man had dual sword in scabbard on his back.
‘’We don’t want any troubles.’’ – Kushi spoke ‘’We are just traveling through the forest.’’
Man unsheathed his swords and approached warriors slowly. He spoke nothing and suddenly, he started running towards warriors. Fifteen warriors quickly reacted and attacked him. This man moved with such a skill. He crouched and spreadhis arms, cutting legs of two horses, who fell with their riders, who got pierced by Vagrant as soon as they hit the ground. Then, more Vagrants appeared on trees and fired arrows in direction of Bold’s warriors. They raised their shields to defend themselves, but that didn’t helped them much, especially their horses.
Meanwhile, Bold attacked Vagrant that stood in front of him. He didn’t wanted to risk the life of his horse, so he jumped off it at the Vagrant. He kicked him in head during flight and knocked him on the ground. As Vagrant hit the ground, Bold pierced him through his mouth and raised his look to five Vagrants standing on the tree.
Bold stabbed the sword in the ground, took bow from his back and arrow, and aimed. He strained a tendon to his ear and aimed, fired. First arrow shoots the Vagrant right in the eye. His corpse slumped to the ground and released the rills of blood.
‘’One down…’’ – Bold whispered to himself and took another arrow from quiver on his back and aimed once again. Second arrow managed to hit Vagrant in his neck. As the arrow hit him, he placed his empty left hand on his neck and collapsed at the ground next to his comrade. ‘’Second down…’’
Vagrants on tree also fired arrows at Bold’s direction, but missed every time. They were firing them until Vagrant who was beneath them raised his right hand and ordered them ‘’Stop! Now!’’
Then, Vagrants on tree sheathed their weapons and disappeared. Ten of fifteen Bold’s warriors survived the assault of arrows. And even those who survived were heavily wounded. Everyone except Kushi and Desmondes, who protected both themselves and their horses.
‘’Tell me who you are and I may decide to spare you.’’ – Vagrant spoke to Bold and his men after he sheathed his weapons.
Kushi wanted to say something but Bold ordered him not to. He approached Vagrant and spoke instead of Kushi ‘’I am Bold O’Ginn and these are my men. I escaped Praven this morning because someone tried to kill me last night. We are traveling to Uxhal.’’ – Bold spoke to Vagrant who raised his eyebrows when he heard Bold says O’Ginn.
‘’So, you’re O’Ginn? My apologies, I didn’t known it was you.’’- Vagrant suddenly said and bowed his head ‘’Our leader will not be happy when he hear we attacked an O’Ginn.’’
‘’Why?’’ – Bold curiously asked.
‘’Because our leader is Alain Damodred.’’ – warrior said and smiled when he spoke Alain’s name.
‘’So that is why you decided not to attack us.’’ – Bold said to warrior and smiled ‘’Well, you don’t have to tell your leader anything. We are leaving.’’
Warrior just stood there and watched as Bold and his men gallop out of Iyindah forest.
--
Uxkhal wasn’t that big town. He couldn’t compare to Praven, although it’s walls were of amazing shape. The round towers were the most beautiful. There were two highest of them, built next to the Uxkhal’s main gates.
After Bold and his party managed to get into town, they went in the closest tavern they found. ‘’The queen’s touch’’ was it’s name. When they got in, Bold rented rooms for himself and his men. Desmondes meanwhile went in corner with a beer mug in his hand.
Bold looked around himself and spotted a blonde maiden sitting at the table, drinking wine. He approached her and sat next to her ‘’May I know your name, my lady?’’ – he spoke to her and smiled.
She smiled to him and answered ‘’Not your bussines, brute. Go away.’’
Bold’s smile immediately disspeared and he blushed, but decided not to give up ‘’I am Bold O’Ginn, legitimate Khan of Wolves. May I know your name maiden, when I have told you mine?’’
She widened his eyes and then smiled ‘’You really are Bold O’Ginn?’’
Bold smiled to her and nodded his head. This maiden was such a beautiful woman. ‘’I am Ymira.’’ – she said and smiled to Bold. Ymira? I think that’s the name Desmondes spoke in dream…
‘’Ymira!’’ – someone yelled. Bold recognized Desmondes’ voice. He quickly turned and saw Desmondes laughing and running towards him. Yes, that’s the name Desmondes spoke in the dream.
Ymira stood up and smiled. Then Desmondes hugged her and kissed her ‘’I finally found you!’’
Ymira smiled to him and said ‘’I am so happy.’’
Bold looked at Ymira, then at Desmondes. Damn you Desmondes…, he thought, drank his beer and left the table.
