20 Sep: The Etruscans, 9th–2nd Centuries BC

Ancient Rome had deep roots in the 'Villanovan' culture that we call today the Etruscans. Their long-lived civilization can be traced to 900-750 BC in north-west Italy. They were a sea-faring people trading with and competing against Greek and Phoenician peoples, including the Carthaginians. They were also a great land-based power, especially in the 'Classical' period, where they expanded their power north into the Po Valley and south to Latium. In the 6th century BC an Etruscan dynasty ruled Rome, and their power extended southwards to the Amalfi coast. In 509 BC the Romans rose up to expel their kings, which began the long 'Etruscan twilight' when their power was squeezed by the Samnites and, most especially, the Romans. Drawing on archaeological evidence including warrior tombs, paintings, sculptures, and fully illustrated throughout, this study examines one of the early rivals to Ancient Rome.

18 Oct: Legion versus Phalanx

From the time of Ancient Sumeria, the heavy infantry phalanx dominated the battlefield. Armed with spears or pikes, standing shoulder to shoulder with shields interlocking, the men of the phalanx presented an impenetrable wall of wood and metal to the enemy. Until, that is, the Roman legion emerged to challenge them as masters of infantry battle.Covering the period in which the legion and phalanx clashed (280-168 BC), Myke Cole delves into their tactics, arms and equipment, organization and deployment. Drawing on original primary sources to examine six battles in which the legion fought the phalanx - Heraclea (280 BC), Asculum (279 BC), Beneventum (275 BC), Cynoscephalae (197 BC), Magnesia (190 BC), and Pydna (168 BC) - he shows how and why the Roman legion, with its flexible organization, versatile tactics and iron discipline, came to eclipse the hitherto untouchable Hellenistic phalanx and dominate the ancient battlefield.

The Army of Pyrrhus of Epirus

Pyrrhus was one of the most tireless and famous warriors of the Hellenistic Age that followed the dispersal of Alexander the Great's brief empire. After inheriting the throne as a boy, and a period of exile, he began a career of alliances and expansion, in particular against the region’s rising power: Rome. Gathering both Greek and Italian allies into a large army (which included war-elephants), he crossed to Italy in 280 BC, but lost most of his force in a series of costly victories at Heraclea and Asculum. After a campaign in Sicily against the Carthaginians, he was defeated by the Romans at Beneventum and was forced to withdraw. Undeterred, he fought wars in Macedonia and Greece, the last of which cost him his life.
These 3 books look like MUST HAVES

Pictures look GREAT!  especially the phalanx.. Any picture of the "Cloaca Maximus" ?

Other than the stuff posted before, just fixes and tweaks. Finally fixed the lords getting the wrong titles when switching factions, some would call themselves Lady and I was unsure if it was a bug or a feature. World map still needs some reworking, streamlining the pathfinding, prevent parties from getting stuck in some locations and some other terrain deformities that I won't tackle just yet as I'm also working on a map for another project and I don't want to mix things up.

I can't remember, it was so long ago ........

Do your Hellenistic cavalry couch their xystons, as lancers ? As opposed to Gauls and Italians cavalry " spears " ?  Is it a customised authentic " two handed " animation for that " couch ", then ?

Have you Improved Female Faces ? ( please ) ( and costumes )

Do you feel that you can channel all that frustrated 1429 energy into RaW 2.6 + ?    I am sure that RaW is a bigger crowd  - pleaser !

I'm sorry - this could be a case of  " Don't mention The ( Hundred Years' ) War - I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it ! " !

Xystons have a two handed attack animation, no "couchable" spears/lances in the mod.
No improved female faces for now, there's new costumes although they might have been introduced in 2.5 already but they had an issue that is now fixed.
The work on La Relance is being transferred to a new mod yet to be announced.

I'll have a short break next week, maybe then I can focus on the mod a bit more. Lots of boring and time consuming things to do before releasing the update so I tend to procrastinate instead...

Just to betray my modding ignorance, re the faces, is it not just a ( fairly simple ) matter of folding Virake's Improved Faces mod ( or the like ) into your own ?

Depends on the pack itself, if it's just textures it's a simple copy-paste as I haven't changed the name of the female face textures, if it makes any changes to skins.txt there's some more work involved as simply replacing it would break the male faces in the mod.

I think we are talking about you doing it, not me ( aren't we ? ) - are you not interested in this sort of aesthetic improvement for RAW ?

They look a bit too much dolled-up in my opinion, I'd rather look for other packs but that doesn't stop you from adding them yourself.

I know what you mean. Even well done " next generation " deliberately - made - plain faces, with the odd beauty here and there for effect, are a huge advance on the now anachronistic " artless " faces of 2010 vintage.

Funny how a cosmetic side issue can make such a big game play impression. But then again, it is just the same as how nicely your armour has been modelled, textured, or whatever.
