With the recent announcement of Bannerlord Early Access set to March 2020, excitement has been growing inside the community for what could possibly be one of the very last tournaments on Mount & Blade Warband. Obviously, with Bannerlord itself having been announced a while back, the rumours of tournaments being hosted for the very last time go back far in time, so much so that it ended up becoming a well-established joke within the competitive community. For that reason, erring on the side of caution remains the safest approach as it still is to be seen how the game will be received once its access is spread to a larger public.

Nevertheless, there is no arguing that March of next year will be a month awaited by many players of the community, competitive or not, and for that reason, the upcoming tournaments set for the end of this year ( Nations Cup 2019 ) and the beginning of the next one ( Warband Native League 8 ) might be looked back at some of the very last competitions ever played on the game. In the case of the 10th edition of the Nations Cup, applications closed the Saturday 28th of September, and we are now in the third week of the competition.

To accompany you in this competition, BladeCast_TV will be publishing a series of contents which we hope will help you to enjoy this tournament to its full extent. Below, you can find a list of some of our upcoming articles, as well as those already published.

In this series of articles, we will take a closer look at some of the participating teams and dive into six of the biggest storylines of this Nations Cup 2019, continuing today with France and BeNe.

France and BeNe have been part of the Nations Cup landscape for about as long as the competition existed. They both had this ‘trial and error’ phase in 2010 where they ranked themselves in the lower part of the league table, but it didn’t take long for them to reveal their true potential to the community. In 2011, BeNe was one match away to make it to the quarter-final, with their rival, USA, making it through only due to a slightly higher round difference. But the real performance that year came from France who, after coming third in a tough group, went all the way through the second group-stage and knockout stage, failing only to a strong Polish team in the grand final. Driven by their success, France carried on that strong performance onto the next year, under Nubijiku’s leadership this time, where they defeated everyone in their way and claimed their first title of the Nations Cup.

At the time, and after such a convincing performance, it was hard for the Frenchmen to imagine that their national team would experience a dry period which would last until today. The year after their win, Nubijuki resigned from captainship, followed by many of the RNGD players also present in the French national team. The position was taken over by Paulo, at the time the only rival of Nubijiku in the french scene, but he had to work from scratch with an almost entirely new team, being able to count only on former NC champions Peter and Thibault, and eventually failed at meeting the success of his predecessor.

France didn’t make it out of the groups in 2013 and 2014, and when they did in 2015, it was only to be decimated by BeNe in the quarter-finals. Paulo’s influence over the French team took time to bear fruits but in 2016, France managed to show reminiscence of its past performances, defeating Russia against the odds in the quarter-final and only falling short in the semi-final against the future winner of that year, Turkey. This could have been capitalized upon in the following years but, unfortunately, France’s performance in 2017 was nothing worth being remembered, as the team led by Subzero and Tardet ended-up falling to the lower bracket quite early and was forced to face Turkey once more, this time without being able to score a single round in their elimination match. For the last edition in 2018, many of the french veterans resigned altogether and France had to work out with a weakened team, only counting a few experienced players such as Swap and Maximou, under Elwaen’s new leadership. As it was expected, they could not accomplish much and finished the competition 13th out of 14 teams, which would go down as France’s worse result out of any Nations Cup.

THAT SEMI-FINAL AGAINST TURKEY IN 2016 WAS A SOUL CRUSHING MOMENT FOR FRANCE, WHERE EVEN PETER'S PROWESS COULD NOT SAVE THEM

When it comes to the rest of BeNe’s path in that competition, the story is a bit more nuanced. In 2012, despite a solid performance in the group phase, they were sorely defeated by the UK in the round of sixteen. The following year was by far one of BeNe’s worse performances in the Nations Cup, losing every one of their five group matches, most in quite a one-sided fashion. But it was 2014 that was the toughest pill for them to swallow. Placed in a tough group with Russia, the UK, Canada and Greece, BeNe fought admirably but couldn’t make it to the quarter-finals, due to a decision of the administration which ruled out the points won in the tie-breaker against Canada, giving them a smaller round-difference than the United-Kingdom and Russia.

While this unfortunate event could have marked an end to BeNe’s ambition in the Nations Cup, it did revitalize them instead and the next year BeNe topped their group, defeated both France and Turkey in the quarter and semi-finals respectively and qualified for a grand-final against Poland. That grand-final turned out to be an amazing match, from which Poland emerged victorious but it also certainly showed the true potential of BeNe. Probably willing to show that this performance was more than a fluke, they came prepared in 2016, repeating their success of previous year by coming first of a group featuring Sweden, France and Czechoslovakia. While they made quick work of Germany in the quarter-final, their semi-final against the United-Kingdom ended-up being a whole other story and BeNe only prevailed after an intense match where both teams didn’t seem to let go of each other, qualifying for their second grand-final. Unfortunately for them, it was not meant to be their year either as BeNe fell victim to Turkey, but it definitely helped to establish the team as one of the strong contenders for the NC.

As expected, BeNe qualified for the knockout stage in 2017 and went on to face the United-Kingdom in the quarter-final of the upper brack, for a well-awaited rematch. The encounter was as intense as the previous year but eventually turned to the advantage of the United Kingdom this time. This would not have been an issue at all if, falling in the lower-bracket, BeNe hadn’t faced the USA and shockingly lost against them, eliminating themselves from the competition. That unexpected loss certainly did hurt the team more than they would have liked and the following year, BeNe, same as France, had to play without many of their veterans, mostly due to personal incompatibilities between some of the players, but also a lack of interest from some others. Without their full strength, BeNe wasn’t able to perform beyond expectations and ended up in the very last position.

WHEREAS FOR BENE, THAT MUST HAVE BEEN THIS INSANE ROUND COMING DOWN TO THE VERY LAST SECOND AGAINST POLAND IN 2015

Looking back at the performances of BeNe & France over the years, it is clear that they both had these similar shaky starts until they eventually peaked in form, at different times. Their players have known all sorts of emotions in the Nations Cup and the most recent years have highlighted the struggles both these teams have faced. With that being said, you can definitely still sense the hunger these players have for getting back to their old selves and this edition of the NC might very well be their last occasion to prove they still have it.

For BeNe, the first positive sign this year has been the return of players like Watly and Surkan, who had been instrumental in establishing BeNe amongst the top nations and went missing in 2018. It will give the team more depth in the cavalry area and more experience as a whole. The main issue for them at the beginning of the tournament was to deal with a lack of motivation and activity from some of their key players, as some of them remained uncertain for a long time if they would take part in this Nations Cup. Nonetheless, it seems BeNe has been mostly coming together for the first two weeks as proven by their excellent results against Sweden & Norway and Poland 2. Ciiges and Kane performing well is also a reassuring factor for BeNe and it should play a huge part in securing the team a direct ticket for the knockout stage.

For France, they will be able to count on a core of players who won the latest Nations 5aSide, namely Paulo, Brian, Thorr, Peter, Tiberias and Maximou. This makes for a very solid base but the challenge for that team will be to find the remaining players in their starting line-up, especially in the infantry area. These additions might play a key factor in giving France the edge they were missing in past competitions, but it will also come down to managing egos and finding a positive mentality, especially in tough situations, something the French players have not always been good at. For now, Tiberias, MouS and Vince make for a trio of impressive infantry candidates and it will be up to France to utilize them as effectively as possible. Against Turkey in their opening match, France showed some visible weaknesses on the closed map but the fact they managed to bring back a 6-2 deficit on the open map and turn the match into a draw is a testimony of the team’s potential. Moreover, these mistakes were not reproduced against Germany last night which allowed the Frenchmen to take control of the match from the very beginning and never give up the lead, making it one more reason to not underestimate them.

ARTICLE BROUGHT TO YOU BY @BLADECAST_TV, CUSTOM GRAPHICS BY @ROSSLINGTON UK BANNER BY @ROUDRAC ARTICLE WRITTEN BY @TARDEEET, PROOFREAD BY @JARVISANDPI

Here is the second storyline for this Nations Cup. As per usual, I apologize for the lack of content there has been between the beginning of the NC and now but stepping-in as admin for the tournament obviously meant it slightly increased my workload as of late.

Nevertheless, I hope you will enjoy the article. Some flags might be wrong and some others are missing for BeNe rosters, I asked some help around to BeNe players (big thanks to Kane, Golradir and MaHud) but we were not able to find everyone so if you can help to fill the gaps or correcting a mistake, let us know!

The rosters themselves are taken from the tournament board but sometimes they do not reflect accurately who has really been playing that year so if you know some information in details to help us be more accurate, we appreciate if you could share it with us. These rosters aim at showing a general representation of the different people who played for their nations throughout the years, not much else.

Edit: And many thanks to Gibby and Kiano for helping with the proofread this week!

You all hating on Surkan but nobody couches people at spawn during the early round like he does

(nobody dies as often as him while trying to do that tho...)
