This is a new idea for an mmo. But not an mmo how you know them. This will be a mix between strategy game, pen and paper rpg and warband.
A note upfront: This thread is not for adding any ideas or discussing concepts. This is merely here to express your interest in either working on the project or playing it (or disinterest if you want, but in either case please don't clutter the pages
). If I can get a team, we will open up a subforum where people can discuss stuff. Also it will take a few weeks before I can commit myself too it, so you'll have to be a little pattient for input from me.
The inspiration behind this mod is as you can guess Transsylvania. So what can you expect?
Vampires and werewolves ... not. But wolves maybe?
Here's the backdrop.
In a fictional country consisting of open plains and fields lies an area that is surrounded by mountains, forests and water. This area has been inhabited by people living in tribal villages for a long time. But the nation it lies in was an emerging power and generations ago five (number may change) towns have been founded, drawing in skilled craftsmen from empires far away, to exploit the vast resources of this untapped region. Trade has been thriving, but now the kingdom is invaded. The invaders, barbarian archers on sturdy ponies (Khergits
) have defeated several armies of the king already and are making the countryside unsafe. The kingdom is on the verge on crumbling, the last army of the king is marching from the northern borders in a desperate effort to safe it. So much is know to the inhabitants of the 5 cities beyond the forest.
Some are saying that the invaders cannot pass through the woods with their horses and they are save however the outcome, others are arguing that they are reliant on open trade routes to feed their children. Many different cultures are crammed into a tight area. Last but not least cut off from the religious authorities far away there is a lack of clear guidance and many disputes have arisen recently.
So whatever happens, conflict can be expected ... and iron is plentyfull in the mountains.
So much for the fluff, gameplay:
1.) Fluff matters. There will be no constant random battles, instead there will be regular events in which thematic battles deciding the fate of the region (or individuals) will be fought out. Also a system that allow players to keep track of events that affect them or add to them.
2.) A character system that allows to customize chars, but no or very limited leveling. There will be some playing as leaders, some as warriors and some peasants. There will also be noncombat skills, that govern for example how wealthy the character is. Also there will be a limited freedom in individualization options so that characters are recognizable but the army on the whole as well. How exactly this is going to work is still to be decided.
3.) The towns will be lead by players and leaders are required to make political decisions. Special groups/events will be played by game masters.
What I envision is some kind of giant p&p rpg on national scale with battles fought out in warband. How the strategy part works out is also not decided.
I guess it will be a mix of classic strategy game elements and game master decisions. If someone realizes that he can just crank the taxes to max and overrun the other cities with the best equipment, expect all the peasants and craftsmen to loose all their expensive gear and receive a message "Peasant uprising! Gather on the marketplace on Sunday 16:00! Death to tyrants!".
4.) Scaling. What I mean by this is that we start small with a small country at peace. First battles might be a bandit raid, etc.. Then, once the playerbase is high enough to warrant it (and balance has been playtested in the smaller battles) we can implement factional battles. And who knows maybe the land beyond the forests can be united and conquer the lands on the other side one day?
Who do we need?
Scripters - I can code myself but I figure this will be a larger undertaking so any helping hand is welcome.
Sceners - Someone has to make the towns, villages and other stuff. We can use native stuff but it is a little to small, what I want is "epic".
Designers/Balancers - Someone to work on the aesthetics, using the models we have to create good looking factions, maps, etc. Also someone who can assess the balance.
Modelers - not so much, I guess there's enough goodlooking stuff in native/open source. A few people for special requests by designers would be awesome though. And maybe someone to make stuff that is really lacking, wolves like I said.
Server Providers - self explanatory.
Admins/Game Masters/Story writers - for all the stuff that happens, and of course dealing with trolls, watching for teamhurters in battles, etc.
