Better map angle

The current map angle is hideous.

It's way too close to nearly overhead. You can't see anything in the distance, and navigation is very confusing. It should be at most 45 degrees! Ideally it should be even closer to flat than that.

Ideally, being able to unlock the camera and to have modders able to set the initial angle would be much better.

Wait, can't you zoom out and zoom in the angle? I'm sure that when I zoom out, the map is totally flat. Or seems like it.

The angle stays nearly overhead, the way the sun is at noon.

If you play  around with the map editor a bit then play the game you'll realize it's a million times better when the angle is closer to what a FPS has. If I can find my photoshop disks, maybe I will take some screenshots to illustrate....

Again, referring to a favourite game of mine, a Medieveal: Total War map angle would be good.

I'm all for this one.  There is currently NO POINT in contours - they have no impact on movement, and you can hardly see them from your lofty viewpoint.  What waste!

Imagine a FPS view, coming round the side of a hill to see - Dark Hunters!!

The angle is partly on purpose. M&B is not very efficient with map scenery, e.g. crashing when too many trees are in sight. Actually not trees but triangles.

Why is the performance so poor, though? It makes no sense to me. Thorgrim's map editor works fine. Also, the maps ae very low poly and so are the icons.

If anything I want (at least for the player) the actual unit to show on the map. A few thousand polys should not cause such strain.

I'd love to see this. A lot of maps I've made have been unable to show the work that's gone into them because of the view, and all contours seem to do is add to motion sickness. Armagan's making some changes to the world map for the next version, so we'll just have to sit tight. Hopefully the existing problems with maps at the moment, like GetAssista mentions, as well as graphical problems that occur if you can see beyond the edge of the map in game, will be addressed.
