Better Horse Balance

v1.130 rebalanced horses but not well enough IMO.

All armored horses now require the same skill (4) to ride and all move at the same speed (40). The differences in armor (40-61), charge (28-36), and health (150-175) don't really matter in practice so the only reasons to choose one over another are maneuverability, price, and availability.

I have a simple suggestion to create more variety...make "armored" a modifier similar to "heavy".
Currently "heavy" -- as in "heavy saddle horse" -- adds +3 armor, +4 charge, and +10 health to the base "saddle horse".
My suggestion is that "armored" would add +30 armor, -4 speed, -4 maneuver, x2 charge, +10 health and +2 riding skill requirement to the base horse.
A horse would be able to have both "armored" and "heavy" modifiers at the same time.

For example, a "saddle horse" has 8 armor, 45 speed, 44 maneuver, 10 charge, 100 health and requires 1 skill to ride.
An "armored saddle horse" would have 38 armor, 41 speed, 40 maneuver, 20 charge, 110 health and require 3 skill to ride.
An "armored heavy saddle horse" would have 41 armor, 41 speed, 40 maneuver, 28 charge, 120 health and require 3 skill to ride.

This "armored heavy saddle horse" would be a decent mount and the low skill requirement would let people buy them early on but the low health would encourage them to upgrade when they get a chance.

The next choices would be the armored versions of coursers, desert, and steppe horses... all skill 4 to ride. Coursers would be the fastest (46 speed) but still have fairly low health (130 for "armored heavy").
"Armored heavy steppe horse" would be 43 armor, 36 speed, 47 maneuver, 24 charge, 140 health, and require 4 skill to ride.

While such horses may be good enough for companions most players are going to want the best possible horse which will be the armored version of either the sarranid horse or the hunter depending on if they value maneuver or armor and health more.

"Armored heavy sarranid" 43 armor, 39 speed, 50 maneuver, 40 charge, 140 health, and 5 skill requirement.
"Armored heavy hunter" 51 armor, 39 speed, 40 maneuver, 56 charge, 180 health, and 5 skill.

Of course the exact values of the "armored" modifier could be tweaked but somewhere near my suggestion seems like it would add more variety to the available horses while keeping them within the range of what already exists.

edit: just noticed there is a suggestion board...perhaps this could be moved.
