I don't know why everyone knocks the Rhodoks when there's Sarranids around. Their armour is like paper, they don't have any good weapons, and in singleplayer their armies are like 90% footmen (in my experience). Rhodoks at least has really good top tier guys.

The problem with the Rhodoks is their infantry branch. All of them suck except the Sargeants. The Veteran Pikemen are only useful if you use PBOD and have the "polearm bonus against cavalry" activated. And even then, they get mauled against Lancers and Knights on foot unless they have Sargeants around to save their asses.
