It depends what kind of character you plan on playing. If you're planning on playing on horseback it's hard to go wrong with the court lady (spirited courser beats the heck outta the swaybacked saddle gump that the squire gets).
Most of the "classes" are pretty straightforward. I like the nun and priest classes, all that starting intelligence (plus adding 3 more if you are so inclined) equals a ton of starting skill points.
Yes, the merchant is best because you start with a lot of charisma to get a lot of allies (So you dont die) and then you can level up to be really good at fighting. Otherwise you die and dont get exp.
