Best laptop for under 2k?

Users who are viewing this thread

2000 New Zealand dollars that is, roughly 1600 USD.

I recently acquired some money and I've been meaning to get a laptop for quite some time. Originally I planned to just get one I can type notes on at uni, but alas, my ego can not permit a meager laptop. Thus I am now after the best I can get with the money I have, which hopefully is capable of running games like Skyrim or BF3 at least at medium settings.

Best laptop I've found so far is this one, for $1600 NZ, can anyone better it?

Cheers.

Well, I was going to suggest this one because it should be around USD 1600-1800:

But gotdayum! Your country sure overprices these things.

Probably not necessary, unless you're fixed with a certain brand in mind. As I see it, there's only a couple of brands that are overpriced in your country. The HP seems to be well within price (1/2 than the Asus, and the difference being the Asus has 16 gb of RAM which seems a bit overkill considering the rest of the specs, and a slightly better GPU).

You might want to have in mind this before deciding to buy:

I did look that up actually, luckily I'd rather play Skyrim than BF3 anyway. More like Starcraft 2 in fact, and that should run fine.

Looks like this is about the best I can get in the price range then? I'll probably go for it. Thanks.

750 GB HDD / 5400 rpm
This will **** every operation you do. Get a faster hd. Also, I7 in a laptop isn't necessary imo. Whatever you buy, I highly recommend wiping it and only installing software you want. Most builds come with built in malware, particularly from places like HP. That being said, I would steer clear of any laptops from HP or Sony. They have a very bad record.

This one is shiny, if you add Office and upgrade the vid card (~1700USD). Some people dislike Dell as much as I dislike HP, for different reasons (usually support from India).

How about this one? Only issue I can see from the reviews is that it's quite heavy, perhaps annoying to take to uni every day.

The one you linked does look like great value for price Trevty, 3 pounds lighter too. HDD is hardly an issue when I can get a 2TB external for $160 NZD (130 USD).
RAM looks low compared to the 16GB I looked at, but that's pretty silly since my Desktop has 4gb RAM (and 32bit, so not all used) and runs everything fine.

The weight is hardly an issue if you get yourself a decent laptop bag.

I suggest you spend less money on a laptop and more money on upgrading your desktop. Since you know, it sucks playing games on laptops.

It's really pretty great, I can play BF3 on high with no trouble.

Somehow I doubt that a bit but people say high and don't mean the actual high settings of the game (which usually have on AA to some low setting).

I have a laptop backpack that I used back in highschool that I still use to this day. Came with a dell laptop which surprisingly held up very well, didn't think they would make backpacks that good (they ought to just make those).

After owning a laptop for around 4 years, and as a gamer myself I would agree with this. Now you can even get a decent netbook or equivalent for $200-$500 that will do basic computer work FINE, spend the rest on the desktop and it will last MUCH longer. Plus, having a laptop for games (at least with mine) meant a lot of overheating and you typically can't go anywhere without a wall charger anyway so it somewhat defeats the purpose in itself.

Lets not forget the tiny screens, the ****ty keyboards, the ****ty mouses.. etc. I mean by the time you have it to a point where its enjoyable to play games on you might as well just have a desktop anyway.

Alright, you've convinced me! Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I'll get a decent laptop, not an uber gaming one, and use my other money to upgrade my desktop into a monster.

This one? Only issue I can see with it is that it is HP, and I didn't know it was an issue until Fehnor said so. Comes in at 1500 NZD.

Edit: actually Trevtys one still seems like the best deal. Anyone know any reason not to get it?

Edit2: yep I see a problem, Amazon wont ship laptops to NZ..

If you plan on using a laptop for typing notes and carrying around and looking cool, get http://eee.asus.com/eeepad/transformer-prime/features/

****ing amazing, and inexpensive.

Would be good if he wanted a tablet or to use android but you can get netbooks (and soon ultra books) for cheaper that perform better as notebooks. They obviously don't have the functionality of a tablet like this one so it would just be whether or not he thinks a tablet would be helpful in some situations.

The good thing about newer laptops is the designs themselves are actually nice. My laptop looks like junk compared to what is coming out now and mine cost over 2k. Even if you spend $500 on a decent portable device and spend another $1500 on a desktop that is enough money to actually just rebuild an entire gaming desktop , also pretty good timing if nvidias new cards decide to come out.

Another advantage the prime may have is if you have a mobile phone that is also android it would be able to interact with it a lot easier then if you had a windows device (although windows has nice phones coming out now too).

That looks pretty nice actually, but I really think I want a proper laptop. I actually got some more money, so I can spend $1500 on both laptop and desktop. Every laptop I've seen that fits the criteria though, turns out to either be a bad brand that can become defective after a while, or it's from somewhere in america and doesn't ship laptops overseas... I shall keep looking!

How big a deal is it having a 5400rpm HDD rather than 7200rpm? Because I've seen several laptops that look ideal, the exception only being the hard drive speed. It's not that big a factor, is it?

If it actually lists what brand the hard drive is or model number you could look up comparisons to 7200rpm drives. Unless you plan on doing large file transfers or games that require a lot of loading, you would be fine just having 5400rpm.

In fact, if you can save money ($100 or so) by getting one with a 5400rpm drive you could opt to replace it with an ssd and get MUCH better speeds than a 7200rpm (albeit it with lower capacity).
