Best female starting armor---fancy dress?

I don't generally play a female, but thought I's try it a couple times recently.

I find it amusing that the dress, casual wear, is the best armor for the female character during the first level or two of the clan. the 'armor' she starts with is worse than the casual dress. The drops from any sort of bandits, hideouts, etc generally isn't better. The only better would be if you win some in a tournament.

I'll add the qualifier that I am referring to the dress given an empire culture player, unknown whether its better for other cultures as well.

The stats of several armor pieces do not make the greatest sense, for example a fur shoulder offering more protection than mail. Now after release going through it in the xml files and changing it to more meaningful values is one of my plans.
