This is the greatest mistake, don't put your archers on a hill, they waste their ammo due low accuracy. Place your archers behind a hill, they will shoot better.
If you use the command to hold fire you can place them on a hill.
Though I too prefer to put them behind the hill. This is especially deadly when the enemies do not have adequate shields. This tactic was actually most deadly in Onin No Ran - there are no shields and samurai archers are deadly with their bows.

Placing archers on a hill is extremely efficient if you're in a defensive position. Naturally you'd have to tell them to hold fire to preserve arrows, but it also gives an angle to continue firing while your melee is fighting. Having them leveled doesn't - then they shoot at the gaps which can lead to friendly fire even if they try to avoid it.

Yes, they hold the fire but enemy also shoot in your archers, that's the problem.

They don't if you have the infantry 10 or 20 paces ahead. Atleast not for me, that's why I like the strategy.
I almost never lose any archers in skirmish battlefields, and the ones I do lose is often to cavalry.

Have you tried taking a Rhodok held castle before with a lot of sharpshooters inside? It's as if trying to take a town full of Nord veterans who also coincidentally have the best crossbows.
I cheated and used my PC invulnerability skills to snipe a few of them with each go. Eventually whittled it down to a manageable number after a week or two.

And I like the strategy, you said that you have a infantry line, but not all the infantry have shields, so...another block for your army  :???:

best archers?  I usually run around with Nord Skalds (v1.011).  Also have recruited Vagiers and trained them up to Ivory Sentinels.  Unfortunately, most of my army is mounted Lady Knights trained up from peasant women and when I set these girls to charge there ain't much left over for my boys to shoot at once they hit the enemy line.

Nord Archers get my vote. They have the most character I reckon. And I'm a Nord the a Nord... gotta stay loyal to you're own and all that jazz.

in my opinion the rhodoks are much better than any other archer cept vaegirs because the rhodoks have way better melee abilities. vaegirs inflict more damage at a range but rhodok sharpshooters can defend themselves. i eliminated the rhodoks first because they are my worst enemy in sieges.... except ive never sieged the nords so i dont know if their infantry is too much of an advantage without hordes or huscarls like i would have

I don't tend to use Vaegir archers very much, due to my computer not being able to handle large enough battle sizes to handle battle within one wave.

Is this problem a rare one, because not many of you seem to worry about your troop's ammunition at all first or second wave at all.

Same here.

Why you don't update ypur computer ? From pentium 4 to 5, it cost a lot of money but you not waste your time for loading process, gameplay, if you have pentium 3, throw it away and buy another.

I prefer Vaegir Marksmen myself but one thing I have learned is that you can make do with any of the faction choices if you don't have access to your preferred faction choice. Turning off 'Fire At Will' until the enemy gets within effective killing range will make your archers that more reliable and efficient. Its more micro managing than just leaving 'Fire At Will' on all the time but highly worth it in big or long battles.

Well, here's the thing about Rhodok sharpshooters: as ranged troops, they're not quite as good as Vaegir marksmen but they're a little better as melee troops. So, about even overall. However they're tier 4 , not tier 5 so they train up much, much faster since that last tier is slow both because it requires more Xp and because most of your heroes with training skills won't contribute until the end game. I'll take the Rhodoks any day.

Rhodoks don't have enought weapon points on Crossbows and they shoot with small accuracy.
thats why you keep a horde of them.
I too prefer rhodok crossbowman (actually i only recruit rhodoks but yeah) since they are much better at siege attack/defence where distance is nonexistant and accuracy is not important.
