Being Pagan vs Christian

I've made several characters in Viking Conquest. For various reasons I end up deleting most of them (often because of bugs, which is acceptable because the DLC is new). One of the things i'm struggling with is being Pagan or Christian. I like to get that "viking feel" and go Pagan and then pillage monasteries brutally, but the problem is that in the storyline you eventually need to become a vassal of Northymbre, which is a very christian faction. I am forced to convert to Christianity to get some troops going, but even then I have negative relations in all villages. Any solutions?

Northymbre is a christian kingdom rule by a puppet christian king.

The real power are pagan lords.

Why do  you feel compelled to convert? You can recruit troops in other areas of the map that wont be christians.

Once you get your own fiefs you can then recruit from them as well.

Or you can use mercenaries and bandits/vikingr/prisioners as troops.

Once the storyline is completed you can also leave Northymbre if you like. Become king somewhere, or lord in another faction, ...

You can also fake convert for a few weeks while doing the quests and then become a pagan again. Ulthred did that for like 1 day :XD

Cheers

What you said is true... I guess i'm just used to recruiting troops from the kingdom I am a part of... I guess on my next character I will just stay pagan and raid like there is no tomorrow. Also, I guess a bit of a history question: Northymbre is a viking nation, right? If that is true, why are they Christian? I don't know the vikings, so I am no expert in any sense but this seems weird to me

Had the same issue. But in long run, managed to go from -170 reputation pagan raider to around +100 reputation noble and even fix relations with some towns.

I converted to Christianity cause it is simply much easier for gameplay. You can just do nasty things - as long as you donate to monasteries frequently, all your sins are cleansed

It is also easier to keep both pagans and christians happy while you are a christian. Once you have a town or castle, there are lots of events firing up which require you to chose between favoring pagans or christians, like, whether to cur down and ancient tree or not. I just take whichever option favors pagans, getting + with them and - with christians, then just donate to monasteries to fix relations with christians. As a result, good relations with all.

I see the religion as another difficulty choice for the player, as staying pagan is more of a challenge.
