Becoming a vassal but no fief given?? Also Questions about being a Merc

OK I have a couple questions that I help someone can help me out with.

First I am at a point where I have two saves just to test out the game, one where I am a Vassal and one where I am a Merc.

For the Vassal, I was expecting a village fief to be awarded like in M&B but I see this is not the case in BL2. I am assuming that I have to do great deeds and eventually after some point, I will be awarded a village fief or maybe even a castle or I can take a castle and get one that way (although I was reading that in BL2 you don't always get to keep the castle like in M&B). Can someone enlighten me more on how this works?

For the Merc, the Queen said she would give me 15 gold per bandit party or other notable deeds as a payment. My current party of about 40 takes about 300 gold per day to upkeep and I can't see killing more than 1 bandit party every few days so I honestly can't see the point in being a Merc (I also never understood why being a Merc wasn't profitable in M&B as no one would be a Merc if they didn't make more money than they could spend). However it is also mentioned that the influence you earn while being a Merc is converted to gold over time. I tried to test this but I literally waited in town for about 20 days just to see how much gold you got from the influence conversion and unfortunately it was not converted in this time frame. Does anyone have any insight on this mechanic or can anyone enlighten me as to the benefits of being a Merc when the payout is so little?

Thanks in advance all.

U also get 25 gold per day as a merc

Well I am still interested in how much gold you get with your influence get converted and at what intervals of time it gets converted because 25 gold per day as a Merc still doesn't even put a dent in my upkeep cost. No Merc unit would work for less than the wages of its troops with some sort of bonus for the leader.

Honestly for a game that tries so hard to give a good roleplaying experience, it really fails with Mercs. I mean no Merc unit would work for less than the wages of its troops with some sort of bonus for the leader.

Help take down a castle or city, and you can be awarded that castle or city in the election that results afterwards.

Yeah I figured that would probably work out that way but I was interested more in the how villages were awarded by the faction leader. Obviously in Warband you got a crappy fief awarded to you as soon as you gave your oath but that apparently isn't how it works here. I was trying to figure out how you go about being awarded your first village without having to take a castle or town. I am guessing eventually you are awarded a fief once you become a vassal but I was hoping to not have to rely on a guess.

When you join a faction as vassal, probably all fifefs are occupied, simply because when you get a castle all villages goes to the holder as well, the same is I belive for cities, there's no separate villages anymore. Yesterday i got a castle, and the two villages of it came to me as well

Ahh...I guess that makes sense. One the other hand I was looking forward to growing my tiny village into a city.

I hope they change that. Vassalage and fiefdoms should be tier based, more so in feudal societies. Castles control one or more bound villages, castle lords should be able to grant the villages as a fiefdom to a character. In turn the character is the direct vassal of the castle lord. Cities control one or more bound castles, The lord of the city should be able to grant a lord-less castle to another character who in turn becomes a direct vassal of the lord of the city. The "King" is at the top of the hierarchy, followed by the lords of the cities, then to the castle lords, and finally knights/mayors/chieftains of the villages.

In my current play-through I am independent but hold a castle and two bound villages. I should be able to grant those villages to another character to manage and in turn they become my vassal and provide taxes, troops, food etc. I really hope they go deeper with settlement management, building, etc in the future.

Yeah that is how I always thought it should work and wish it worked. I always felt if I own a castle, I should be able to command the lords of its villages and on up the chain, ie own a town and have direct command of all its castles and villages. It would be cool if you gained a different title as well. Lord for village, Baron for Castle and Count or Duke for a town.

I have taken multiple city's and they gave em all to one guy! so unfair
Try waiting until you are clan tier 3 before helping conquer stuff; will increase your chances a lot that you win elections i believe. When i got to tier 3 clan i was given a castle and i didn't even vote for anything. Then i went on to take a town that i used 300 influence to get. lol
