I was just playing this very game last week and I've decided to write a little something on it.

To begin, I'd like to introduce anybody who has not played Midway to Eidos Studio's newest war game. In this game you find yourself in the midst of the heated Second World War in the Pacific Ocean fighting the 'Japs' as they are commonly called during the cut scenes. You lead various types of navy units such as destroyers, cruisers, battleships, subs, carriers, aircraft, and an assortment of smaller things such as anti air bunkers. There is nothing high tech about the weapons. The best being rockets used by a late unlockable plane in the campaign. You may play the US campaign or an imaginary Japanese campaign centered around the idea of if the Empire won the Battle at Midway and reached capturing our 50th State, Hawaii.
If you've already played Midway, you'd know the repetitive missions your sent on with crappy emotional cut scenes (although quite well done in terms of graphics and presentation). This is much the same with Pacific just without the narrative story. And remember those annoying phrases your squad mates would always shout out on the radio as if they had time when their plane was on fire or wing fell off? Phrases like "I'm hit" or "I'm going down!". Well their back. And although they do give an efficient way to warn you that one of your planes was just shot down, it can be quite annoying if the enemy over powers you. Additionally, the voice acting for the Japanese narrative is worse than that of Midway. One thing that Eidos markets as a new feature for the game that really annoys me is "New planes and ships!". No, there are no new planes OR ships. The "new" planes are just the same dog fighters and bombers with new names. The tactical map has been made a little more shiny but its still the same. This homogeneity among the games features, such as missions, tactics, arsenal, and even the fact that they went from "Midway" to "Pacific" in the title, has really only shown that the company is out there to sap every last dollar they can from the franchise.
Of course, nobody can argue that Midway was fun. Pacific is fun too. Repetitive, but fun. So if your friend has it, wait till he's done and borrow it. I wouldn't advise you go out and buy it unless you really do have nothing else to do.
So if it says anything I'd give this game ¥¥¥¥¥ 3 Yen out of 5.
