I know it's still early days and there is a lot to still discover about the game, but I've played all-day 1 on a battanian playthrough and I find it strange they basically have no archers. Sure their troop tree has skirmishers, which are so garbage I don't even want to think about how bad the aseri are doing, but Battanians strength is THE ARCHER! Yet the only way to get the archer is by chance as it actually comes from a different starting unit and not as a branch from the battanian volunteer. It comes from the Highborn Youth tree, and Highborn Youths are not easy to come by. Now, this complaint might seem petty, but Battania is right next to Vlandia, and they have better footman and crossbowmen essentially right off the bat from their troop tree, meanwhile, Battiania has sharp twigs and tiny shields.
So here is my suggestion to stop Battania from getting stomped by the Vlandians, Sturgeons, and the Empire, and get rid of the spearmen line which makes zero sense for a culture that primarily fights in the woods, and replace it with the falxman line, then where the falxmen line was put an Archer -> Veteran Archer -> Fiann. Pretty simple fix.
