Bad career choice?

I'm in a bit of a pickle here and could use some strategic advice from experienced players.

I'm about 160 days in and have been taking it slow, just enjoying the game and getting the hang of battle etc. As a result I've just recently become a vassal of Sarleon and was granted a tiny fief. I have businesses in most towns and my fief gives a bit, but I'm running at a deficit of about 2-3000/week because I've maxed out my army with top tier units and at least a few of my businesses are under sequestration due to war. As a result, I don't really have time to participate in campaigns and further my position with Sarleon and the lords because I constantly have to run my trade route in order to support my army. I'm not too good at hand to hand combat, so I've only managed to win the tournament at Sarleon so that's not really a steady source of income for me. Neither are prisoners as I don't have a good blunt weapon I can rely on.

So here are some options I'm considering.

1. Quit vassalhood and become a merc again. It pays for my army and I don't have to worry about denars, but can just enjoy the game. This doesn't seem a good career choice as I think I just have to grind through this stage and get some better fiefs somehow.

2. Reduce my army to the bare minimum, cutting to the bone. Again, this doesn't seem a good career choice, but then again, I'm still not strong enough to take towns or castles or large armies by myself, so I guess I could just follow the other lords around and jump in on battles here and there.

3. Do something drastic and try to take a town and hopefully win and get awarded the fief. This is a long shot as I'm sporting 112 units and I'm only level 20 or so and probably wouldn't survive a siege.

4. Disband my army and train. Just hit the training field and grind my weapon profs so I can start winning tournaments.

5. Grind bandits for loot. This is pretty much out as the loot system is terrible. 9 out of 10 battles I get broken clubs and fur hats.

6. Keep going and hope to break even. Make friends with all the other lords and King Ulric and hopefully get awarded a fief more at some point. Problem with this is that the marshals are all idiots. They just ride around aimlessly or sit still for long periods of time and Sarleon hasn't actually captured a single town or castle here 160 days in, so there's not much hope that this will happen. The marshal won't take my advice either cause I'm new so I can't talk them into attacking anything.

Come to think of it, the only fiefs to change hands anywhere in Pendor is Fierdsvain taking one D'Shar castle and the village that belonged to it. Other than that the world is at status quo. At this point I'm leaning toward throwing my army at either a town or a unique spawn army just for the hell of it (I really need that 3rd Qualis gem so I can bling up my Strange Rune Bow). Then I'd be left with my companions and minimum expenses.

Any help is appreciated!

Fighting wars is the way to make money in this game: loot, prisoners, and ransoming lords.

An army size of 112 shouldn't be difficult for you to maintain. What are your stats, and what are your leadership, prisoner management, trade, and looting skills? Leadership makes a huge difference.

In general, in the early game I focus on 1) getting enterprises in 15 out of 18 towns 2) collecting companions 3) collecting Qualis gems to develop my character. This usually takes ~300 days. I usually become a vassal at some point just to grab a fief (developing CKO) and to get married.

Post a screenshot of your character if you can.

Yeah, I guess capturing Lords would be a good source, I didn't think of that. Plenty of those around. And eventually I may get a better fief than a crappy village, hopefully.

There's probably 2 or 3 other towns I can set up businesses in, but I don't have the cash right now to do that. What I really want is some Qualis gems! But if you're saying that the first 300 days are gonna be a bit slow like that, then I guess I'm not too far off the track.

I'll try and grab a screenshot next time I play, but I think I'm set up pretty well. IIRC my stats are 21-19-13-12 or something like that. I started with high Persuasion and Leadership due to my background, so those are now at 10 and 6 respectively and I'm currently reading the book the bumps my leadership by 1 so it'll be 7 soon. Prisoner Management is only at 2, which has been a problem once or twice as I've had to release prisoners. Normally I don't take that many prisoners as my primary weapons are Lance, Sword and Bow. Finding a good blunt weapon might have to be a priority.

Looting I've got covered by Sara the Fox. She's at 7 now, but we mostly get crap. I do have a couple of skill points in reserve that I've been saving for a rainy day. I'm trying to decide whether to put them in Tactics, Surgery or Prisoner Management or save them for my next STR/AGI threshold.

U can use Leonion tweak to make ur companions PM skills count to prisoners pool.
Also... get 3 Q gems AFAP and trade then for +6 str,agi and char (traveling merchant Finest De Digist, or sth, u can meet him at random taverns, some travelers know where he can be found).

I already found two and bought the Strange Rune Bow at the mines. The next one I get will go to upgrading that bow.

But I'll probably add that tweak.

I thought about it, but opted for the bow. It's killer! Stats will come with time, but the bow is rather unique.

You could've saved one gem by getting the free rune bow when Wolfsbode spawns

I did get that and had two for a short while until the united team of Ravenstern lords wiped out Wolfbode. Then I lost it again.

Anyway, focus on getting your leadership and PM skills up, using Qualis gems if possible. Also get a fief so you can install your CKO. Doom Mace CKO makes all money problems go away.

If a player has money problems early then he just have too much men. Lower the party size and have only the best like HA and alike, then you'll start to get good loot. Raise an army only when you need to fight large lords parties. Also give your comapanions Winged Maces. And read this guide for other stuff:

I bought myself a warhammer and went about capturing lords. Also established a couple more businesses and added a market to my village top boost prosperity. That all turned out to be a lucrative business and I'm now in the black again and things are looking up.

I was worried all that war was going to ruin my relations with lords I might want to recruit later on, but I just picked lords I was already unfriendly with and accepted that I'll have a few arch enemies in this game. Gairebold, Bodgan and I will never be seen raising a glass together, lol.

All this war boosted my weapon skills and I'm not able to start winning some of the easier tournaments. I think I got it now, so thanks guys!

I find that war is the easiest way to boost relations with lords just by catching and releasing them (unless theyre dishonorable, then screw em). You get the instant +2 and then if you go talk to them later you get some bonus relation points. All my best buds are my former enemies

Yeah, that's true too. I usually ransom the *****y ones and free the upstanding/honorable ones.
