Backspace key causes graphical error.

I looked around a bit, (not too hard though) and did not find a answer.

When in a battle (any battle) and I press the "Backspace" key my screen pulls up like a scroll (like if you opened the character menu) yet its blank with only the little mini map and troop orders.
Pressing backspace again leaves the "scroll background" up, yet the game keeps playing.

I have push escape, then exit that menu and it goes back to normal.

Suggestions?

I just got a fresh install yesterday.

Windows 7 X64
7970 core edition
amd 1055 t at 3.9 ghz
8 gigs of ddr3 @ 1333.
256 SSD

I am starting the game using steam, if that matters.

I downloaded the patch, I extracted it inside the floris 2.54 folder.
I still get the error.
