No this isn't about Avatar: The Last Airbender
I was hoping somebody knew something about this movie as it just kind of blindsided me with this ad.
Also any thoughts on it or the director?

Also I was having a little trouble finding it with the search function due to the popularity of the words avatar and movie.

It's been on my radar for months, but I only just saw the trailer for it yesterday. Could be good, but I'm still on the fence.

The trailer is for the movie Avatar (2009):

I'm not familiar with the story, although apparently is has some following.  The director is James Cameron, the director responsible for the Terminator series and for the film Titanic (1997).  He's been promising a "revolutionary" experience, and there's been a lot of hype going into this film.  I think he's a good director, no matter what people think of Titanic.  He seems someone ambitious enough to tackle this project.

I doesn't look like my cup of tea, but I don't doubt that it will be a visually strong film.

Common enough story theme. Spacefaring humans find a planet with some resource we want/need, find intelligent but somewhat more primitive aliens living there, and send soldiers to harrass/relocate/kill them. The protagonist is a human soldier who finds sympathy for the aliens, and helps them fight back.
Actually, replace "spacefaring humans" with modern people, "planet" with a locale on earth, and "aliens" with poor natives, and it matches quite a lot more movie and book stories.

All that said, I do expect it will at least be entertaining.

I actually find simple yet dynamic storylines often the best. If everything is implemented well, there's no need for complex storylines, which most often end up being farse.

btw. I think the "Avatars" in this movie look dumb

I really like the design and all that bling. Hopefully the story won't be too dumb. The avatars are hopelessly cute.

What's it rated?  It's hard to find good movies that are also really kid friendly, and I was under the impression that Avatar was something of a childs game or somethingrather?

Mmm, perhaps.  It's just that I find it hard to take seriously a statement from a movie about the morals of humanity from a child friendly movie, like 9, as apposed to District 9, for instance.

So apparently they decided to make this a 3D movie (you know, the kind with those funny glasses). Ugh, I hate it when they do that. There should still be some theaters showing it in the normal fashion though.

I'm getting mighty pissed off at the fact that every movie lately has been in 3D, like its some sort of gimmick to convince us to go to the movies or to prevent pirating or whatever they are trying to do.  I've seen far too many bad 3d movies and its left quite the sour taste in my mouth.

As are you my dear... This looks like a movie made interesting by major special effects.. I can't help but think of warcraft when I see the elven like creatures. I find the story line itself rather familiar after having watched district 9.

That sounds identical to the plot of the recent animation movie "Battle for Terra". I mean, to the most minute detail, it is the same.

The only difference seems to be that this will be live action and the effects will probably be more awe-inspiring.

It should prove interesting.

And that the aliens in that one built ships to fight back instead of nabbing the closest bird for it.

There'd better be a phenomenally good reason why the main character turns into an alien apart from oh its convenient for plot acceleration.

I think these guys are far beyond needing reasons to do **** by now.

Thats what happens when you ass pump 50 million dollars into a movie about magical elves on another planet of floating islands with rope bridges and griffins.

Zug Zug I say...

Saw a trailer for it a while ago, but I'm not too familiar with the story, save the basics. Still, seems like it will be entertaining.
