I've been trying to find a decent game with strong similarities to auto duel, but taking advantages of the advancements in technology since 1983.

Basically I'm looking for something that isn't an MMO game (so no AutoAssualt) I'm hoping for something that combines the idea of the free form traveling trader with death races and what not. Preferably real time, but I could deal with turned based, although I really dig the idea of burning around the road with arcade style controls shooting up other cars. RPG elements (driving skill, gunning skill, repairs) and the ability to scavenge wrecks would be a winner.

Any good ones out there?

I like that Idea, there was a game on the Sega Genesis called Outrider which was fun because you would go into first person view and shoot at the motorcyle Mad Max type guys with a sawed off shot gun while driving. It was an unlicensed Road Warrior game, when you ran out of gas you had to get out of the car and play a goofy old fashioned sidescrolling game to get more fuel. <EDIT> and you needed to get more shotgun shells too.

Road Rash? It doesn't have any exploration, but it has combat and you can upgrade your bike etc.

Interstate 76 & 82. Pretty old (Based on the Mechwarrior 2 engine, first one was released in '99) but good games if you can find them. No freeplay as such, but there's a campaign, deathmatch (online or with bots) and a collection of scenarios. No roleplaying as such, though you do scavenge the wrecks of your opponents for new parts. Sounds like exactly what your looking for.
