Auto-upgrading heroes

Just wondering... does this option work?
When i pick the option to have them take their pick from the loot, they never ever pick anything.
I always have to do it myself for them.

you have to talk to them and tell them how to prioritize their pick! It works alright, however I chose to do it myself because there are still some flaws. You can't, for example, have them upgrade their "blunt" weapon or their "lance". Here the options are one-handed weapon and polearm.

Right now they pick gear based solely on price.  So you have to watch them that they don't throw away rusty chain mail for a nice pretty new suit of noble clothing with less than half the armor protection and similar stuff.  Basically, I go thru them once manually and sort their gear in descending order of usefulness.  Then I keep the best unused item of each type (hat, boots, armor, gloves, shield, polearm, bow, arrows, bolts, thrown, 1 hander, 2 hander, horse) in my inventory.  When I loot, I take anything less useful than that out of the item pool before I let my gang sort thru it, then replace my benchmarks with what they cast off.

They are thrown back into the item pool. So you better check the itempool before you abandon it since it may be your chap switched his high end gear for something more crappy (but ranked better) and you will lose that precious item.

I never use autoupdate. Too weird acting. And I like the customization you can have with all the nice and shiney items in PoP. My troopers aren´t usually fielding the top stuff but the eyecandy one. Each and every one needs to look sexy and stylish.

E.g. first thing coming into my mind is Sir Timothy. Any Helmet would fit him, but if you´ve ever seen or purchased the Lion Faceplate Helmet you will crave for the thing just to be able to outfit Sir Timothy with it.

Btw, what happens to the items that are replaced?
Each one strips naked (unless you've told them to keep current on a weapon slot, or not upgrade armor or horses), puts their existing stuff in the pool, then takes the most expensive things out of the pool.  So they'll do the hand-me-down thing to the next guy underneath them in the party list.

Nope. For the Hand Me Down thing you need to have them pick (picks more expensive stuff from loot pool, former stuff goes into pool) and redo have them pick afterwards again (former expensive loot is picked up by next hero, his equipment goes into pool).

Most likely, you will end up equipping them manually anyways. So don´t bother with autoloot.

We should compare notes then, cuz hand-me-down works fine for me on a single pass.  Odd that it should behave differently for us.

Well, I haven´t used autoloot in an eterenity. I used it seldomly enough in some mod I don´t recall right now but quit plainly for its stupid method of chosing items and the beforementioned problem.

If this a modificated and improved autoloot function it may be better than my memories tell me. Seems like there are a few things that improved and weren´t better back in the ol´times.

From the times I've used it, I've always thought that it went down individually by how you order your companions...the first guy replaces anything that would make an improvement, putting his old stuff in the pool for the next guy to choose from.

I wish though there was a way to sort by usefullness (damage, armor numbers) rather than cost.  And I've also noticed that in some cases they will get rid of poor quality items (battered, cracked) even if they don't have anything to replace it with.

I equip companions manually.

Each has 8 slots, and I use 7 companions so 56 slots to think about.

Gydia the doctor gets everything first.

Easy.

Sometimes it bugs up. Some items get swapped back and forth while one is definately superior (for example a Fel helmet with 58 and a dread helm with 55).

I used it in Band Of Warriors when I had all the heroes (20?), had set up the slots for each one and stuff. Don't see much point when I just have 8-9 heroes since I know what they all have. Also my preferences are different than just going by item worth.

I use it all the time, but I don't let them pick items right after a battle 'n stuff.
What I do is:

1. Save up the awesome loot from battles and/or stuff you bought
2. Put them in a clean item pool
3. Let companions autoloot

This way I still get to decide what they'll be wearing, but I don't have to bother going through them one by one.

If you have multiple companions, make sure you press the distribution button more than once.
the first time you distribute it, the existing item will be thrown back to the item pool instead of going to a next teammate who needs it.

Lets say Sigmund has his armor(50def) and Sara also has her armor(40def)

When sigmund acquires another armor(60), he will throw back his existing armor(50def) back into the item pool (it wont go to sara)
When you press the button for a second time, then Sara will pick up that armor(50def) from the item pool.

Seriously, what are you and noosers and I doing differently?  They ALWAYS do handmedowns for me.  The only way what you've described could happen in my game is if Sara is above Siggy in the party list AND she can't wear the 60 armor herself.

Its exactly the same. Only difference is that I mentioned about pressing the distribution more than once. 8-)
I usually have around 10 companions and it usually takes 1-3 clicks to do hand-me-down.

We're talking past each other.  The reason I didn't mention needing more than one click is because I DON'T, even with 20 companions.  Why is it working differently for us?  I'm trying to bughunt.

I havent tried the damn Autoloot thing back since BoW mod. And even then it pissed me off so much I equipped my companions manually - just like I do. So I don´t know wether the sript got improved or not, but I had to click a couple of times for hand me down back then.
