This is no emergency, just a quality of life thing that is in several warband mods.
For each of the 4 slots you can set "keep current" or the kind of item you want that companion to upgrade for that slot (shield, arrows, polearm etc)
There is also a toggle to start/stop upgrading the armor (all pieces), and one for the horse.
After that when clicking a button, the game looks into your party inventory, compares stats and auto-equips better items (if found) into the correct slots.
Quite the time saver when you have 8 or 10+ companions.
