Hey guys, just checking in from the hotel this morning on my laptop.
Long long (long) story short, there was a fire in my attic yesterday which the fire department got under control, but it kept flaring back up so copious gallons of water had to be continually used throughout the attic over a few hours time. The stuff in the attic is naturally destroyed (it was almost completely old junk anyway so no big loss), but the main damage throughout the house is due to water damage. The ceilings through over half the house have collapsed from the water (maybe more overnight, I'll see in an hour or two) so that it's ankle deep of sopping ceiling remains and insulation throughout most of the house. They managed to cover most of the furniture with tarps, so hopefully a lot of it is salvageable. There will be water damage along the bottom of most stuff though.
My main computer got bundled out of the house safely, but as it was sitting about 30 feet away from the house it got sprayed from the firehose spraying out of the hole in the roof which they cut to ventilate and get most of the smoke and superheated gas out. How's that for screwy luck? Most of my computer stuff seems to have gotten only slightly sprayed and will probably be OK, but that's yet to be seen. I'm giving it a couple of days to dry out before I try it and find out what's working out of it and what's not. I expect my UPS and nice new monitor might well be toast, as they seem to have taken a moderate amount of water. I turned my monitor on it's corner and water was dripping out. I do still have my old one though, which is unharmed.
I was up about 34 hours trying to get the valuable stuff secured yesterday and didn't manage to get but 5 hours of sleep last night. I'm sore all over and have a splitting headache this morning even after taking some extra strength Tylenol about 30-45 minutes ago. So, I'm still not firing on all cylinders right now.
The insurance should basically cover everything, thankfully. They're estimating it will be about 4-6 months before the house is livable again, but possibly up to 9 months. They say a fair bit of that will be for securing permits; I don't really understand why they would need new permits for repairing an existing house, but who knows. Oh well.
So, over the next few days I might not be around much while I try to get things sorted out.
