Attendants/(real)Squires

I've seen some suggestions in the past to have various types of noncombatant units on the field, such as healers etc. , but I thought that that sort of thing might spoil the flavour of the game.

However, I have recently thought of a special unit that might be a welcome addition; squires / attendants. Essentially, these NPCs carry "extra" inventory items in their gear, and can be ordered to head to the player, acting as a sort of "mobile baggage", enabling you to access their inventory.

This would be handy in many situations: Perhaps your horse has died and you need to swap out your lance for a bastard sword (since your other slots have a shield and a crossbow w/bolts), or perhaps you are an archer and it turns out that even two quivers of arrows weren't enough. You then hit the "6" key or whatever to summon your attendant and he or she comes running.

They could be levelled up in a fixed pattern, like standard troops |(not like Marnid & Borcha) in order to prevent attendants from being too useful outside of a battle (that's for other heroes) or perhaps Marnid and Borcha could simply gain the ability to provide certain items in battle.

It would also be cool to have "Bodyguard" type units, similar to Marnid and Borcha except that they would actually guard you instead of running off and getting killed.

as always, comments and criticisms welcome.

Yes, it's a great idea, however they must be able to die. I'd love to see my squire racing towards me on a saddle horse and then, when he's no more than 5 foot away, get a throwing axe in his face.

I'd prefer their 'death' to be like Marnid or Borcha, but if that is too "safe" for them, perhaps like a horse? Each death, a chance to be crippled, and if already crippled, a chance for real death?

I had several suggestions regarding squires in other threads, and thought you might like to add that to the ideas here :
  • If banners will be implemented, they will be carried by the squires.
(only one handed is needed for that btw)
  • A squire will use a horn to notify events (and add to the immersion of the game).
events can be new enemies/allies arriving, the commands you issue (horns are used to coordinate commands over vast distances), and end of battle.
  • Squires keep a safe distance from you, and are not targetted by enemies, until the current wave of allies are dead.

I think that surgeons/healers should be added also, but they shouldn't be present on the battlefield.

making hireable squires isnt really that hard  even i could do it with the mod tools. Just make new heros that can be recruited at the pubs sometimes.

You should be able to recruit them, however instead of paying them a salary each week, you could train them instead. Possibly having a seperate career progression from other existing units.

I'm sure you're right, but I'm here to make suggestions for the core game, not for mod artists (though they are welcome to do what they will).

Also, can you really make one who can provide an inventory for you?
