I've seen some suggestions in the past to have various types of noncombatant units on the field, such as healers etc. , but I thought that that sort of thing might spoil the flavour of the game.
However, I have recently thought of a special unit that might be a welcome addition; squires / attendants. Essentially, these NPCs carry "extra" inventory items in their gear, and can be ordered to head to the player, acting as a sort of "mobile baggage", enabling you to access their inventory.
This would be handy in many situations: Perhaps your horse has died and you need to swap out your lance for a bastard sword (since your other slots have a shield and a crossbow w/bolts), or perhaps you are an archer and it turns out that even two quivers of arrows weren't enough. You then hit the "6" key or whatever to summon your attendant and he or she comes running.
They could be levelled up in a fixed pattern, like standard troops |(not like Marnid & Borcha) in order to prevent attendants from being too useful outside of a battle (that's for other heroes) or perhaps Marnid and Borcha could simply gain the ability to provide certain items in battle.
It would also be cool to have "Bodyguard" type units, similar to Marnid and Borcha except that they would actually guard you instead of running off and getting killed.
as always, comments and criticisms welcome.
