I've been playing M&B for a few days, and I have to say that it feels exactly like Sid Meier's Pirates!(the level of polish notwithstanding), but of course in a vastly different and (I think) cooler setting. Anyways, one of the best parts of Pirates! was capturing towns and cities and claiming them for your home country...I don't see why this would not be easily implementable into M&B as well.
Of course, any town or city in this game world would certainly be well defended, so you had better be fighting in command of, or in support of, the army of a count/duke/king. Now, the trouble of having hundreds of troops fighting hundreds of troops seems troubling at first, but like all combat in this game, it could just be broken down into smaller component battles.
Perhaps any city with walls would have to be seiged, and thus present an extended danger to the attacker....if an opposing army happens by, they would surely come to the aid of the city being seiged.
Anywho, I just thought something like this would be an essential kind of end-game feature. For after you've attained the rank, the gold, and the items, and all that's left is trying to conclude the great war.
