Are training fields gonna be useful for anything in the future?

Right now they only serve as a exploit to raise combat ranks. Will I be able to train my troops in the future, or maybe take a lord I'm tutoring to the ring and beat the **** out of him like you can with the plebs?

Whaaaaaaaaaaat? I didn't even know you could do that. Could you always do that? Can you do that at any point in the game? Why don't people do that early game?
I could sworn I did it in my first game and didn't get no skills.
