Are sieges not working?

I just joined a siege that was underway. Snuck into the city to help defend and lost half my troops. Then once the enemies siege towers reached the walls, the enemy just ran into the wall on the ground in front of it. A couple were able to clip through the wall, but none climbed the towers to attack our troops on the wall. The archers shot at each other for awhile, and I shot as many as I could with my xbow before the enemy retreated after 20 minutes. But they did not seem to understand how to climb the siege towers at all.

It was kind of odd. I hope this works better most of the time? I was in Charas, and jumped in to join the defense if that helps? I hope other siege engines aren't as buggy? Do battering rams work on gates? And do catapults take down walls? Or is that all still under development? Sieges are one of the main reasons for playing the game, especially towards the later half. I hope I'm not building up a large empire just to auto resolve all the sieges so that I don't lose all my forces?

Asking for a tyrannical friend who wants to watch the walls of his enemies crumble before his wrath!
 
So what I noticed when testing various units was some will only scale walls depending on formation. For example, the vlandian seagents on the last siege defaulted to "shield wall", which makes them run to the wall like you described and did nothing. I had to set their formation to another like Line, and they started climbing.

Same with Sharpshooters using their xbows at times, sometimes they stand and do nothing, but if you change the formation to spread out, they all start firing in sieges.
 
That might be something for the AI to consider. Perhaps the same code is causing it to happen with the AI invading army?
