Are my children going to grow up?

They grow up it just takes a long time. My oldest is currently 14 and my wife has been dead since the 6th kid 12 in game years ago. I am assuming they become adults at 18.

Today my oldest son reached 18 and transformed from a little kid into a full grown adult sporting the same bald head as my character.

And yes you can have them follow you around.

Skills are low highest was riding at 20.

They might grow up using actual game time, but my wife has given birth 4 times within a year. My oldest is just 1yo.
When I try to rename a still born child, the game crashes.
If you rename your child, searching the encyclopedia doesn't find them, though do show up as family and you can bring up their encyclopedia page from there.
