Archery.... worth it?

When did the bow ever fall out in favor to the crossbow? I mean, many countries used crossbows but look at England, they dominated the battlefield with their archers firepower, same goes for the Mongols, Huns and many others. The crossbow may be simple to use but the bow outranges it and is much faster. Plus, a good archer is usually a great shot, while a good crossbowman settles for a "good enough" shot

Nothing better than riding close to an enemy and pugging him in the head with a bow as he is about to swing. :smile:

Horse Archery.

Is "hax."

The tank-horse archer character seems to be overly popular around these parts, in my opinion. I enjoy getting into character, and a heavy armored tank with a two-hander on his back and long bow in hand riding around sniping enemies from safety while his men are getting into the thick of battle just never seemed exciting to me.

That, and I'd rather the skill points were in leadership, what have you, than sunk in two battle skills, as discussed elsewhere.
I tend to only use ranged weapons in sieges anyway...so the stationary nature of a crossbow isn't really an issue in that instance. In field battles there are so many other things to do than run around headshotting.

But, to each there own I suppose.

I personally like crossbows more as I am Rhodoks fan, but I have to admit that it is horse archery what saves my ass in loosing battles.

Try to meet any mounted bandits with crossbow - with bow you can run run from them at fullspeed AND shoot back at the same time!

Archery is definitely more of an "assault rifle" style than the crossbow, in that it fires less accurate shots more quickly. It does have a flatter trajectory, but IMO it all comes down to personal preference. I made an Aragorn-type ranger character awhile ago that used a short bow and bastard sword. I used the bow mainly to weaken men as they ran up the siege tower, or to snag enemies that my men otherwise couldn't get in sieges. It was pretty weak, but I didn't like the look of a gigantic longbow strung across my character's back, and it didn't fit for roleplay reasons.

My more recent character is based on my idea of a displaced militia captain, who uses a pollaxe, sword and siege crossbow. I quite like the combo so far. The accuracy and power of the heavy crossbow are refreshing, as I wasn't used to being able to kill guys so easily with one or two shots before. It's a lot slower than the bow and I can't reload from horseback, but I never much liked being a horse archer anyway. I'm more than happy to dismount if fighting alongside my men.

So for me, the crossbow is great as a secondary weapon. As a primary, I'd invest the points for the extra speed of a regular bow.

hmm, yall have given me some stuff to think about, maybe i'll give an archer character a shot

or maybe i'll just edit a char file to have 10 powerdraw.....

but what do yall think about throwing? I like how it only takes up one slot so I can have a shield, sword, and two hander/polearm

Heh, the only reason I'd picks up a javelin would be to use it as a spear. I probably underestimate throwing weapons (as I've been pegged in the head with Nordic axes quite a few times) but it seems like even most AI troops that use it can't hit the broad side of a keep. It's another skill you'd have to invest heavily in before it was sufficiently awesome.

throwing are good: they pack a serious punch thrown and they can double up as a melee weapon too. The axes accuracy seems poor but they make great melee weapons but the javelins + javelins are poor melee weapons but better throwing. Neither are much good at sieges as they are very difficult to gey to the too of the wall..

Bows are best for mobile field armies, crossbows for sieges. Bows are fast and accurate, with lots of ammo, really good for fighting on the move and for suppression shooting(really damn high inensity leaves many enemies too busy dying to actually harm you). Crossbows are a siege sniper's weapon - devastating in field volleys, for armies that don't move much, and are much better against shields and in close ranged volleys than bows. Personally I use a crossbow only with a char that focuses more on support skills and for whom I wouldn't want to spend a few points for PD.

Although currently all my chars focus on leadership(STR,AGI and INT at 9), they still have different weapons(depending a lot on the troops I lead, since I prefer to be uniform with them):
the one that leads merc crossbowmen fights with a spear and xbow;
the one that leads Nord veteran archers fights with a bow and 2h axe(although I too dislike the way the long bow looks, especially when on my back);
the one that leads Nord warriors fight with a shield, mace and stones

little clarification on the throwing rocks - most thrown weapons are wildly inaccurate, with really low ammo, are slow and displace the player too much when used(thereby decreasing accuracy even further). Personally I find all the throwing spears in this game are unrealistically heavy, slow and inaccurate(as opposed to the axes). Stones, on the other hand, are fast, accurate, displace very little and come in decent quantities(two large bags means 40 shots for me). While not a killer, they're good at disrupting the attacks of enemies, leaving them vulnerable for my own troops.

Now, I'd certainly like it for rocks to be even lighter and for slings and slingstaffs to be in the game. The main reasons for crossbows and firearms to make bows and slings obsolete were:
a)in the later Middle ages, battles were mostly sieges. And crossbows and firearms were much more convenient for that due to the availability of cover. Although it should be noted that slingstaffs really shined in that age - they were extensively used in sieges to hurl various projectiles over obstacles, including explosives.
b)like mentioned, bows and slings really take a long time and lots of practice to get good at, while crossbows and firearms don't. Give a peasant a gun or xbow, make him practice for a few weeks, bring a big bunch of them to the battlefield and their volleys will take out almost anything.

I love my Masterwork Hunting bow with speed 101.  I can rain a whole bag of arrows on a closing army before they arrive.

Horse archery is also great.  I get a lot of EXP by chasing down routers.  With only 5 HA and 4 PD I can shoot quite accurately at full speed on my horse.

I don't kite armies unless I am doing a 'train troops' mission - but it works WONDERS for getting 10 or so Nord Footmen a ton of kills while the rest of my army sits back and watches.

What would REALLY be nice is if I could kill horses decently - but alas at this point it still takes ~4 hits on an unarmored horse to bring them down.  I'm hoping with higher PD and better bow I can unhorse people better, we'll see.

The inability to use strong crossbows on horseback is nowhere near a "minor drawback". Using one on foot is pointless, you're a sitting duck.
I wouldn't go as far as calling it 'pointless' - you'll only be a sitting duck if you don't put your troops between you and your enemy. If you're a commander-type character, it allows you to take effective potshots while not needing to spend points you could have put into leadership skills on power draw. But yes, it's not exactly a minor drawback as the hunting and light crossbow are rubbish outside the early game, or as a backup weapon.

On an unrelated note, am I the only person who has trouble getting consistent headshots while moving? Even when I had 7 or 8 PD and about similar HA the only headshots I got were unintentional. :s

headshot while moving? happens sometimes in combat between horse archers. Either when I'm right behind the other bastard or when I'm doing an interception(two horsemen approach each other at high speed, usually only one of them comes out alive)

I dont play horse archer much (though I have been recently) so I thought maybe that was why... but I too have trouble getting headshots while moving.

I usually just circle the enemy going for chest shots on their archers/unshielded units while waiting for the shielded ones to turn their attention to my front lines so I can get some nice back shots...

This is one thing that I find extremely irritating and unrealistic in field battles... You expect me to believe that an entire infantry regiment will turn its back on a enemy line that has dozens of archers firing on them to shield themself from a lone man on a horse a few hundred feet behind them?
