Archer woes

Now I have looked to see if this has been brought up and I think it has but here goes:
I'm standing on a hill with my 5 marksmen and just waiting for the enemy to get in range... the moment they get in visual range the marksmen prepare to fire and shoots, misses by 50 metres or so and then when the enemy is in weapon range they start backing away down the slope of the hill I'm on and then just stands there behind the hill doing nothing except backing if the enemies come closer then being cut down by enemy horsemen when they hit the flat land behind the hill. Why the heck do they move when I say to hold position? Everybody else, even peasants, stand their ground against knights and archers to their death if need be... what is so special about those ranged units, I wonder, since they can all ignore my orders... heck I've had 5-10 ranged units with me that when I pressed charge just stood behind the hill they backed down from at the beginning of the battle... I hate! marksman now... going for 45 knights instead... 20 now so soon I won't need to bother with those pesky, willful and utterly stupid ranged soldiers.

sorry for the long rant but I simply hate them...

oh and I do think the game is great... except for those idiot longrange morons...

my suggestion would be to kill the ai in those archers and have them use longrange even in melee unless I tell them to charge.

Yes but they have the speed to back away to a "safe" distance and fire unlike a footman being charged by mounted troops... they just keep backing away, in a real medieval army (and some modern ones too) they would be hanged/flogged for deserting. Maybe that option would get some fighting spirit from them...
