Apprentice?

Over the last couple years warband has been here, a bunch of decent fan made content has been made. Ranging from overhaul mods to simple maps. I am very sure you are aware of that. Personally I always appreciated the effort but never really took it into my own heart. What I am getting at is I want to become part of the effort, part of the developers community.

My foundations as of now are very rather disappointing. I've looked at modeling and texturing. Looked at some articles, forum posts and software. I am nothing but intimidated. I will not start my own project as I know that won't end well for my self and it will be a dead end, waste of time.

So you might ask why I am even wasting my time with this thread? As the subject suggests, I am essentially looking to become an apprentice. I am looking for a individual or a group of people that is willing to take on a newbie into their hands and teach me, essentially involve me in some kind of project where I can learn on my own and become part of that project. I enjoy teamwork and being part of a team as well as I am willing to dedicate hours into this.

However, I don't know if anyone is willing to do this  I do not know if anyone in this community can be basically be asked with someone like me, regardless I have nothing to lose by making this thread.

this forum of course.

If you are considering this proposal, thank you very much.

Well, for one thing let me congratulate you on your honesty and expressed interest in wanting to learn.

You've encountered the "learning cliff"- i.e., the gulf between what you really need to know to make anything good and what you know.  This is a normal reaction to finding out how complicated this stuff gets

The problem here is, you need to develop some useful skill in order to be all that useful as an apprentice.  Nobody wants to baby-sit a newbie; that's what tutorials are for.

Probably the easiest skillset to learn around here is level design; take a look at the tutorials about it (a new one's just been made that goes through everything you need to know, pretty much).  Compared to coding and 3D artwork, it's relatively easy to get into, although it's hard to become a master at it.

I didn't want to write a word wall. I do have some experience in blender. Made 2 swords and a house  and also made a bunch of playable maps for NW (Simple projects, group fighting maps, tdm etc.) I did hang out with some of the Mount&Gladius developers earlier last year but that didn't end very well. I did learn the base lines though.

Still there is so much that I don't know, and it is not easy for me too look at all this material and just take it in.

Not much else I can say to change people's minds

Well, that does paint a different picture, though.  "I want to be an apprentice and I know nothing more than that I have a lot to learn" is a lot different than "I've done a few things but I don't know what to do next"

Since I can't see any screenshots of your previous work, though, I can't really give you advice; if you're a halfway-competent scener, there are lots of projects that need help in this regard, for example.

Hmm you're right, in the meantime until someone responds to me. I'll just play with blender. Theres a lot of aspects outside of blender of course. If I can Ill get some screen shots here.

I myself find scening one of the most horrible things ever. There's so many things to think about, so many things to place, and the scene editor is a bit clumsy in some aspects. I just can't get myself to work on scenes voluntarily.
I do think you're going to find someone looking for a scener, Diego.
Plus, your other experience is a helpful thing to have, no matter how little it is.

Thank you Lumos, when I tried it before I really didn't love it per say. I didn't incline my self to make maps at will, I just kinda made em to check it out. But honestly its been a couple months. I just started to get my bearings again. Regardless an old friend of mine, Dion is working on his own mod. He has a small team and the mod is coming along slowly but surely. He's not the most experienced but from what I've seen he put together some good source material and improvised with native and his own. So it is looking good, the mod is Romae Bellum. Regardless I'll see about working on some stuff and even joining his dev team in the near future.

If you're interested in extending your modeling / texturing capabilities, I suggest WEe's video tutorials:

in particular, this one helped me the most:

http://livestre.am/TPo4

They're long videos, but just watching how someone who's skilled with Wings3d does their work will improve your own greatly.  That's my experience, at least.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you I'll take a look at them. This thread alone is becoming use full to me, still so much tutorials in the rest of the forge. Man this must be heaven for you guys xD
