First want to say this is a great mod! My machine gun was the best buy ever!

But facing enemy divisions, or even just caravans, I tend to lose a lot of troops to shellfire.

So how do I fire back? I've captured a lot of shells so far, but even when I stand next to my dogrobber the interface says 'no cannons' and won't let me fire shells.

Am I missing out the stage with teh red smoke, or selecting the wrong squad (I have only one squad) or something?

Many thanks!

In battle...
press "G" and you'll see a menu with 4 choices
press "G" again until you highlighted artillery strike (or whatever its called)
BEFORE the list disappears, choose how many cannon you'd like to fire by selecting a squad(it doesn't matter if you dont have squads, squad number is the number of cannons)
AFTER the list disappears, press "T" with crosshair aiming at where you want shells land, red smoke will pop out as confirmation (equip yourself with a radio so there's no need for dogrobber)

Personally, the artillery is really a case of "less is more", since large quantity of shells won't guarantee a million deaths and that'd be a waste of ammo.  usually I use 2-3 cannons at the most.

p.s. you have to spot the target first to fire at them but the enemy can shoot WITHOUT spotting you

Thank you!

Now I still need to find a way to avoid their damn artiliary, especially since I can't use indirect fire.

Anyone found a good formation? I usually just get everyone to spread out to the max so I usually only lose one dead and four injured per strike.

When teaming up with a fellow lord let him take the centre and the artillery hits, when you sneak around and flank the enemy.
When alone you could use squads (which are complicated if you aren't used to them, and sometimes just a pain in the arse) or for example make you infantry spread out as much as possible and put them in front of you main army. That way they should hit your infantry and miss your precious ranged troops. Not sure if this works since I haven't played in a long time and it might be that the artillery always strikes where you have most troops. Artillery isn't really a problem when the fight has begun, so it's just the beginning thats difficult.
You could try putting all your infantry first into battle and then get missile troops as reinforcements. This would however mean that you sacrifice infantry units to avoid some artillery pieces which might or might not be worth it.
Sorry if my post doesn't make sense, I'm a bit tired.

The idea is to lose a minimum number of soldiers while dealing out the maximum number of casualties for the enemy. Wanna live? Better use some tactics.
