Well, the topic kind of says it all. I think it is rather ridicilous that a mounted warrior wearing a full platemail changes the heavy lance in his hands in to a sword and a shield in a few seconds. More importantly, where does the lance disappear?
I definetely think that changing weapons should be a whole lot slower, especially when wearing heavy armour. With lances... maybe you could change the weapon only by dropping the lance. After all, where do you stick a two meter pole in a middle of melee? (Other than in the enemy, that is.) Would it be as well possible to show graphically what weapons the characters are carrying in their ready slots? Such as archer having a sword in a scabbard on his belt while carrying his bow in his hands etc.
On a separate note, since there seems to be fans of the game who differ widely on their opinions about the realism of combat - how about making little things like these adjustable in the difficulty selection? Those wanting fast, light combat could simply leave "slow/realistic weapon switching" option unchecked.
