Recruit
so far, I've been going at it single-handed. 30 or 40 vaegir do seem to be a bit too much for me, so I decided to try out recruiting an army. right now, I have 2 watchmen. Can I equip them with the armor I have and how?

You equip heroes. You 'train' soldiers.

Basically, your watchmen has to survive enough fights and he'll turn into a caravan guard. His equipment will upgrade automatically.

I find surgery VERY useful when it comes to raising an army. Otherwise your attrition rate will be very high.

Don't be afraid to start with peasants. Yeah, they suck, but they level up FAST. Hire like 20 of em and after two river pirate fights you'll have 10 or 12 watchmen. The training skill can also help, though personally I find it somewhat limited.

Training can level up large amounts of low level units, so I'd make sure to take that.

I agree. Having raised large numbers of troops, I've found that training helps those low level units upgrade fast enough to make a big difference in their survival rate. Peasants, watchmen, footmen and Swadian militia all start really pathetically armed so their attrit rate is high getting them to that first upgrade helps.

I like surgery but mostly if I intend to ultimately have large number of top-flight units that are irritating to lose.

See, helping two dozen Vaegir footmen achieve Veteran status comes before spending skill points to increase three or four wounded footmen's survival rate. So I value training a bit more initially, surgery a bit later.

I wouldn't completely neglect either.

Training really isn't worth much except when you first start to raise an army. And it takes alot of skill points in training to really do much anyway. You'd be much better off spending those points on something more useful, and just using river bandits to train your troops. Have your men hold position and just solo the bandits, shouldn't be too hard at all. The only exception is if you're going for an army of sword sisters, as refugees are hard to replace and getting them upgraded fast is essential...but then again, river bandit leveling is still a very viable alternative. Surgery on the other hand is an absolute must.
