Any idea on how to get savegames working on a fresh install?

Several months ago I reformatted my hard drive. I hung on to my savegames for Mount & Blade... the two files I have are:
old_game.swg and sg02.swg. I have recently installed the game and wanted to continue playing on my old character, but when I place these files into the
"\Mount&Blade\Savegames" folder and tried to use them in-game, they do not even appear on the list of games that can be loaded.

Is there anything that I can do so that I can actually load these savegames and continue playing with my character?

I'm sorry to tell you this, Darz ... but savegames are rarely compatable with new updates.

Sometimes, yes ... but after major changes, almost certainly not.

The best advice I can give you is to create a new character and use the in-game cheats to get that character to the same general level and wealth.
