Another Display of My Incompetence

Users who are viewing this thread

So, I bought The Saboteur the other day, after having played it on my PS3. Whenever I go to launch it, it opens the initial loading screen, but with a few weird bands of color in the lower right-hand corner. It then immediately crashes. It's created two error DMPs in the My Documents/Games folder, but I have no idea how those work. After a few hours of scouring the net I've found out that it doesn't work right with newer graphic cards, and that there is a patch for it. I downloaded the patch from EA's website, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I also tried running it in compatibility mode with several older versions of Windows. I've run it as administrator and launched it directly from the folder, without using the launcher.

It works on my other computer, which is pretty old, but it's so old that it won't run the game without lagging horribly, even when the character models look like wet clay models made by a 3 year old.

I am pretty disheartened by this, as I was looking forward to playing it again, and any tips as to how I may be able to get it to work would be much appreciated.

If that patch does not work, have you tried decompressing the patch file using universal extractor? Maybe it contains files you need to replace.

The Saboteur(tm)
Version 1.03 BETA Patch Notes - December 18, 2009
==================================================================

Game no longer freezes during play on the following hardware
combination:
    * ATI video card from the 3K, 4K, and 5K series
    * Windows Vista/7 both 32 bit and 64 bit

Known Issues & Current Workaround:

Users with Quad core CPU's will possibly have significant streaming issues without the following work around. The team is aware of this issue and is working on a fix for it in the next patch update. If you are running a Quad Core CPU please follow the steps below to set Game Only affinity on your CPU. While this will decrease the amount of streaming glitches, it is not a full proof fix.

Recommended Game-only steps for Quad core users only:

Windows 7 and Vista

1.) Boot the game.
2.) Wait for the main menu to load, then press Ctrl-Alt-Delete.
3.) Select Start Task Manager.
4.) If the game is visible, press Alt-Tab, otherwise continue to the next step.
5.) Inside the Task Manager, go to the Processes tab.
6.) Find Saboteur.exe, right-click it, and select Set Affinity…
7.) De-select CPU 2 and CPU 3.
8.) Click OK.

Or maybe you can register your serial with Origin and get the game from there. I have it there and it's working properly.

I tried that fix, but when I click "Set Affinity" it says that the parameter is incorrect. I also bought it on Origin the other day. I'll try decompressing the files though. Thanks for the help.

Edit: Is decompressing the same as unzipping? Because I did that in an empty folder, then copied the contents to my Saboteur folder.

Double Edit: When I try and do the "Set Affinity" to the actual game instead of the launcher, it tells me I do not have permission. This is even when I run it with admin.

T-t-t-t-trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriple Edit: Someone said that changing the priority to "Real Time" may fix it, but after searching around, it appears that changing priority could permanently kill my computer. Is that true?

The Origin version works right out of the box here on my computer (i7 3820 & 7970).

Hm. I don't know why it works for some people on Origin. I've seen others saying it works just fine, and also people like me where it doesn't.

Anyway, I went to install the patch, so I extracted it to an empty folder to copy the contents and I got this:

ERROR0001=Unable to locate cabinet file data.
ERROR0011=User cancelled installation.
ERROR1000=The Saboteur install was not detected on your system. Please confirm that The Saboteur was installed successfully.
ERRORXXXX=Error code %d.
FAILMSG=The Saboteur Patch Setup Failed.

in an SFX document. Any idea what that means? I've reinstalled once already, but does it seem I need to do so again?
