Another Alternate Directional Attack Control

I'm posting this is the suggestions because it seemed to be ignored in the release thread - and after having tried the new mouse look method - it just didn't make sense and seem to work how I thought it would.

The method below is how I thought the game did work..LOL And how I would prefer it did work.

Just a suggestion - it's not my game but this feels better to me:

I had thought the version (704)
Was using the A W D S keys to choose a swing.
At least in my brain that's how it *should work.

So if you approach an enemy you press D and then click the right mouse button to swing right to left...

That would be the best control scheme in my brain the new mouse version didn't seem to work as i expected.

My pretend control scheme:

W then mouse = Swing Straight Down
S then mouse = poke forward
A then mouse = swing left to right
D then mouse = swing right to left

Thanks

Many people feel that this is a good way of choosing attack direction, but trust me, it isn't. If you have played Morrowind with 'always use best attack' turned off, you too would notice that it sucks incredibly. besides, I've never felt too comoftable taking a few steps to the direction I'm going to hit from. It looks stupid and feels awkward. I played M&B with the new system, and I got used to it in half an hour.

WASD for attack direction control is way too restrictive. What if you want to move left and swing right at the same time? You can't!

It's been discussed before and largely rejected - movement direction needs to be independent of attack direction.

one thing i find very hard is that when on horse i look left and swing right... it makes no sense at all and i have to exaggerate the diredtion i am looking in to be sure that my swing will go in the right direction... this means that i get my brain cut in half every time I attack... sigh

Hmmm.
I don't really agree - because I don't hold the key down before I press the mouse attack...

Perhaps what's missing for me in the mouse attack option is actual body animation indicating the direction attack.

The arrows seem random for me - and looking at arrows doesn't really make sense - if he actually shifted his body to indicate his plan of attack would be a lot better perhaps.

I don't know - I think i'm going back to the old attack mode.

I agree with Ripbud. It would be easier and make sense to have movement direction + attack, OR a system like daggerfall, by which you press down the attack / defend button, THEN move the mouse and the sword 'follows' your mouse movement. Currently for blocking I find that I can only block left / right attacks, and would have to end up looking at the ceiling for overhead attacks, which I can't seem to block most of the time anyway. For attacking, it just doesn't seem to do what I want.. Since I have to always look left and right, its impossible to alternate that with swinging the sword in the opposite direction. On the horse, you will always attack the OTHER side, since when you turn towards your foe on the left, the mouse movement is exact same as an attack on the right. ::*(

Is it possible to add the WASD option and the Daggerfall option that Volkier suggested as well, please? Personally, I think I'd go for the daggerfall myself where you click down the mouse, move the mouse into whatever direction and then release to attack...or the Morrowind system...whichever feels better :)

Other games such as Rune use WSAD to determine attack direction and it works perfectly. It's much less useful to have a system that requires you to swing your PoV around than it is to be able to face one way and swing in any direction. As already mentioned, all you have to do is take a half step one way and hold down the attack button and release it moving the other way to swing in the opposite direction while moving.

Either way, the solution needs to unhook mouse movement from swing/block direction because it makes things really hard right now to be able to fight, and see what's going on at the same time. WSAD would be my preference because it's more intuitive, but 'attack then move mouse' would also be much better, as would simply holding down attack or defend and moving the mouse, provided it didn't also control the viewport.

I think some weapons should have only thrust or swing attacks, rather than thrust and swing.

I used to love using spear, while on foot. They are extremely useful in many situation. But now, I find most of the time, my chracter swings it like a stick and got '0' damage, if I ever hit enemy. Often, I can't hit because it's so slow.

So, I think spears and pikes have only thrust attack, other weapons, like clubs, maces and scimiters have only swing attacks and not be able to thrust.

Different thrust attacks, to prevent easy blocking by the opponent such as an upwards thrust, downwards (already ingame) and so on.

Maybe just different animations for e.g. overhead swing would suffice? Spears would become quite useless if everything you could do could be blocked as a thrust... However, if the overhead swing was animated as a different thrust, with possibly longer reach but with slower recovery from it (so if you miss, the enemy might get on you before you are ready), and the block for overhead swing blocking it? It mightn't work with every animation, but it would offer more tactical fun, and that is more important than always correct animations IMO.

I agree. The new mouse system is way better, its almost perfect in my opinion. Almost perfect becouse...

it makes things really hard right now to be able to fight, and see what's going on at the same time.

Well, I dont think is that hard, but I agree it can be awkward sometimes. The trick is that you dont need to move the mouse all the way to the side just to perform a side swing, you just need to move it a little bit, so you dont really have to look away from the enemy.

But I guess Armagan could add the WASD system has an option. We already have 2 different systems to choose from, why not have 3? Everbody would be happy.
