Anime Hair Mod

Anime has a lot going for it.  There is good, bad, masterful, inane, and mediocre anime...  but one thing they all have in common, that alone supercedes all other human art and culture, is the hair.  It is brilliant and wonderful.  I am always in awe when anime characters can tell that some other anime character is a foreigner, due to the 'blond' hair...  as opposed to Japanese characters, who are restricted to black, brown, blue, green, pink, orange, yellow, red, and turquoise hair.

But!  Color is only a small fraction of the character of anime hair.  There are also enormous pigtails, anti-grav Christmas ornaments, dice, bunnies, hairbands, ribbons, braids, antennae, spikes, afros, mohawks, poufs, super-long ponytails, full-body straight, and...  well, anything.  I realize that anime was not widespread in 1257, but computers now are powerful enough to handle anime hair.  And thus, I announce...

The Anime Hair Mod for Mount and Blade!

Goal:  Incorporate anime hairstyles and colors into Mount and Blade.  If possible, allow them to interoperate with Native and all other mods.

Restrictions:  No gameplay alterations are allowed.  Probably, nothing will be altered except for the hair...  though if it is possible to make other changes to the face generator (adding additional parameters [such as eye color] or increasing the existing ranges), such superficial changes may be incorporated.

I am an expert computer programmer, fairly experienced modder, and decent 2d artist.  I have never used Python, made 3d art (though I have used Autocad 3d), or examined M&B's mod system.  As such, I may need assistance - and even if I don't NEED assistance, I am slightly lazy and would LOVE assistance.  Since this mod has no hard-set mathematical rules (about which I am very strict and do not like to rely upon others), has no effect on game balance, and basically has a "the more, the better" theme, I will enlist anyone who wants to contribute.

Furthermore, contributions from experienced M&B modders who have may no interest in anime hair, but are interested in expanding the M&B community, are welcome.

My preliminary expectations are:

1) If nobody joins, I plan to release a mod that allows additional (unnatural) hair colors for Native, in whatever version is currently the latest.
2) If there is a lot of interest, I may release a couple additional hairstyles, and maintain it through patches.
3) If there is interest AND multiple people enlist to help, I plan to put a lot of personal effort into making 2 complete modules; one that is standalone (for Native) and one that may be installed over other mods to allow a multitude of hairstyles and hair colors proliferating throughout the any game; and to maintain the mod until v1.00.

Would anyone like to volunteer?  I offer 10 denars as a sign-on bonus

That's not a fairly bad idea. I have never really liked Anime, but more character customisation would be cool.

Do you know anything about alpha channels, and how they make the hair textures?

I know all about the alpha channel (and other aspects of 32-bit integer textures), and have used it for transparency in a game I was making solo, but I don't see how it would be very useful in hair...  since in a game like this, it is just a texture, not voluminous.

But bear in mind that I have never done textured 3d art before

Well, the way M&b does hair is like this. You have a bunch of blockish sheets, and instead of modelling the hair strands, they make a hair texture with an alpha channel around it, so part of that sheet is invisible, and makes the hair look real. Saves polys too.

Did I explain that well enough, or did I just confuse you? You might just want to take a look at the hair in BRFedit.

maybe you could put anime hairs in an anime mod.But anime hairs in middle-age,i'm not sure...And adding more character customisation is a good idea

What did he say anime hairs like green yellow pink maybe i read wrong.?
bring The Holy Hand Grenade and Tu's i shall destroy the tread

Sugoi!!
Man, the idea of King harlaus with a turquoise afro will give me nightmares for weeks now.I usually keep my obsession for anime faaar, faar away from m&b, but good luck with the mod.

and if you ever want to make a naruto mod, lemme know

Although anime hair is a ****ty idea in my opinion, a hair expansion mod would be intersting, just adding some more hair meshes (that were normal and not "wacky" :p)

While this might not fit into the M&B theme, the anime hair would be nice for a custom set of hair styles, or mods related to anime. More customization will surely take me out of boredom when randomizing new characters. ^ ^

And I swear to never, ever, recruit a girl with yellow hairband, that proclaims to be the "Brigade Commander".

I wholeheartedly agree...

It looks like changing the colors may actually be easy.  There are files named hair_red.dds, hair_blond.dds, and etc.  "dds" means "Direct Draw Surface".  Irfanview has a module that allows dds reading, a filter to adjust colors, and probably saving an altered dds will still result in a valid dds file.  However...  does anyone know of a GOOD program for editing dds files?  And also, in the hair dds image, what is the brown rectangle that looks like a piece of wood in the upper-right?

I was thinking if its going to be anime hair you might as well make the whole character anime looking and maybe some clothing also in the future and try to see if you can make the character have a battle stance than running around like a fag...

(Like a crouched stance or something since it can be possible now because this is the proper version to do such a thing)

I'd try to help and all myself but i never got into trying any of the modding tuts or anything with M&B yet... Maybe I will soon though and try my hand at rigging or something  anyways, all I can do for now is be an idea maker... So good luck

get dxtbmp you can convert dds. files to bmp jpb png etc... thus allowing you to edit them on the gimp or similar

GL on your mod! I'm not experienced enough to model new hairstyles, but I really hope you get it going. I wish you'd tone down the anime part of it though, and focus on making just a hair-mod. Anime would clash too much the theme of M&B and I expect more people would use it if it was just a mod allowing more customization sans purple/green hair.
I'm all for river pirates with dreadlocks!

Rgds and best of luck,
Zathan

I would loooooooove my character had dreadlocks, I hope this mod adds them  Good luck ^^ (I don't think I can do much exept for texturing)
