Hello all
Is it possible for a character who puts all his points into Archery each time he levels, to become as good but with the crossbows and only by using the weapon in combat (and developping the skill that way only) ?
Thanks for replies

eventually i would say yes

Yes, you gain proficiencies though usage of the weapon. you gain faster though usage if you have enough weapon master skill to invest in it if you had the weapons points.

Not to mention you can't really 'master' crossbows, new character level skill is just as good as 300 skill....

Crossbows seem rather unique - they have no strength or agility subclass modifiers [like power strike or horse archery]. I have one game where Borcha has a light crossbow [only light and hunting crossbows can be used mounted, and there's a thread about that here somewhere]. He also has very few points to invest. He develops crossbow proficiency at about one points per battle. I would imagine that your own character played aggressively could beat that, but I would imagine that improvement at a rate greater than 3 day [for any weapon proficiency actually] would be hard to generate - you gotta sleep sometimes. Initial proficiency was 83 at level 13 - by level 16 [about 50 days later] he was at 105 at level 16. Weapon master points were zero until level 15, when it went to 2 [and at which point I took his sword away to force him to use crossbow], and I was splitting his level jump points across 1-hand and crossbow. Proficiency improvements from experience are largely rumored to be amplified by higher levels of weapon master points, and I tend to agree with that.

I don't use crossbows much, but I've read here that the reloading time gets shortened drastically at proficiency high levels. Of course, bows are still faster.

EDIT: Woops.

Crossbows are killer on the damage scale though....Although i prefer bows myself because i go with the ancient saying that "speed is armor"

A very good crossbow that you could buy from a weaponsmith is a 50 dmg crossbows, which require 8 strength. This would be pretty good except for slow reload times, it doesnt work in rainy weather and well, you wouldnt really be considered an archer now would we?

The time/speed of reloading a crossbow is a result of your agility level.

Agility increases your speed in everything. Weapon skill points also increase speeds related to that particular weapon - one handed/ two handed increases your swing speed with those weapons, archery/crossbow increase your reload times with those weapons. Not 100% on throwing, I think it also boosts 'reload' time, though it's that small in the first place it's hard to notice.
