I don't really like soundtracks. All that music can become rather annoying. But no sound is also too plain.
So I made an 'anti-soundtrack' with ambient sounds, with the purpose of creating a medieval atmosphere.

NOTE: If you don't like the music and just want ambient sounds I made an Ambient Soundtrack only.

What will you hear?
Overland map and scenes:
Simple, faction specific tunes, followed by soundeffects such as:
wind howling, wooden carts, glasses and bottles (at the taverns) etc.
Animals - sheep, wolves, birds, bats...

Battle:
Only a few tunes, mostly pads to set a certain mood - and sounds of
Wind blowing, birds,
heavy breathing (male) and
heart pounding...

Experience the joy of killing a man to the sound of birds in the air and cold wind through the trees

Here are a few examples from the overland map (the ones during battle need to be heard while playing):
Title screen/Main Theme:

Lords Hall Nords:

Killed By Khergit (Arg, I hate it):

Travel Swadian:

Escape (panning the map, dragged around as a prisoner):

Well, you get the picture.

How to install:
There are two ways:

1. Replace the existing soundtrack by placing the music folder in the mount&blade directory, and click yes to overwriting.
IMPORTANT: Make a backup of the original music folder if you wish to keep it.

2. To install the soundtrack in one particular mod, then do as follows:

- open the 'module' file in the mod you wish to install Ambient Anti-soundtrack into.
- find the line that says:

              scan_module_sounds = 0

Replace the 0 with a 1 - like so:

              scan_module_sounds = 1

Remember to save.

Place the music files in the 'music' folder in the mod.
And finally place the 'music.txt' file in the mods main folder and overwrite the existing one. Play the mod and listen.

Thanks for the feedback.
I'm sure some will be put off by hearing birds chirping and wind howling,
but it reminds me of old games where soundeffects told you what you were doing, like sound of a hammer when constructing a building

You...you....you.... BAD PERSON!

For now I'm working on two projects but they're in very early stage of development so I'm not starting any thread yet.

First is going to be ambient nature sounds replacement (so there will be wind/animals/grass sounds instead of music playing in the background - just gathering samples and mixing everything in Ableton Live -----> first sample for day environment can be downloaded here.

That's one of my first posts in 'Say Hello' thread....
Haven't got much time and patience to finish that idea though...

Good job man! I really like your sounds. Cool stuff!

Ha, that's great  - wind, birds, sheep, dogs...

Initially I just wanted ambient noises but decided to add a few tunes to underline the mood - and pump it up
The examples you can hear are only tunes, but a few tracks are just ambient noises like yours.

I thought I was original

Calm Night 2

No problem mate! You can put it to good use in your mod if it's any value for you. I won't be coming back to this idea. I already have another projects going on.

What I was planning to do, was to get samples of different town chatter and town sounds (breaking pots, cats, rattling carts) and add them to town themes (for example some Arabic chatter and markets sounds for Khergits) and distant screams, echoes and shouting for battles.

It has nothing to do with originality. It's just that I'm always turning off music in games and rely only on ambient sounds. Unfortunately in M&B ambient sounds are very scarce. Hence my old and not realized idea to fix that.

As I said - use my sample if you want. And good luck with your mod!

Thanks. I like your ideas and might use your track in a possible update.

And we're all grateful for that

There are actually soundeffects for each scene, like glasses and bottles for taverns and squeaking doors for the lords hall etc...
The whole idea is to the create a medieval atmosphere, anywhere you go.

Right, a much improved version 2.0 is up, now called Ambient Anti-Soundtrack:
https://www.mbrepository.com/file.php?cid=10&id=1085

Added many more soundeffects - and removed a few tunes I didn't like (especially during battle).
Now you can experience the thrill of killing a man to the sound of chirping birds and cold wind in the trees

(Special thanks to TheWitcher for putting ideas in my head and the use of some sounds)

Can you put it in a mod folder?  If yes, would you allow people to put it in their mod, if they give credits?

Sadly I can't. Especially since the module system isn't really working for me.
But anyone who's interested is welcome to do it. Just ask around - someone is bound to know how

And yeah, just give credit. No one has to ask permission. It's there to be used.

Oh well  I'd liked to put it in my mod. I also tested it and it didnt work, also tried to add something like 'scan_module_music = 1' in the module.ini and failed.

They need to add this in the next M&B released

Also thanks for a fast reply

Brilliant! I especially like the birds peacefully singing as the humans below are being slaughtered.

I love how all the noises are so crisp now, plus for some reason it makes the game seem a little more dark. Keep up the good work

Is this open to modders if you're given credit?
Use it all you like. Just give credit, for the sake of honesty
EDIT: Notice, if you don't know how to put it in a mod then ask around, because i don't know either

Yeah, I really like that too - or the cold wind in the trees

Hrm, I got the sound to work for all of my mods.

By putting it in the M&B folder or in each mod's music folder?

Edit : I found out how to put it in mods

Thanks to Ruthven to post a link to http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,50101.msg1300258.html#msg1300258 which is a tutorial on how to make the mod reads music from the mod's music folder using python made by Thymo

I personally think that you should change the install method to just adding the text to the music.txt in the module, and adding the music into the custom music folder, instead of overriding it.

But it sounds really great! I love the intro.
