The current story really feels like a one time tutorial thing. Rather than just a single low plot start (like in Classic/Warband), how about an option to pick your start? Some sandbox games like X3 and Kenshi have already done this to reasonable effect. Each option would be rated on its difficulty at the selection screen and mods would be able to add new ones. Some would have variant options that tweak the difficulty of the start.
Some possible options
Some possible options
- Looking for kidnapped siblings (the current start)
- Foreign Vulture Come to grow Fat Off of the Land - You've come from outside Calradia to seek a new life.: Start with no family in a chosen area and low tier equipment (Warband style)
- Militia turned merc - After a successful stint as village militia, you and a few friends have acquired a taste for war and have set off in search of adventure: Start at a random village of your culture with the gear of a tier 2 soldier, a low power but young and fast growing companion that's marked as your younger sibling and a few tier 2 troops, plus good relations with the notables of your starting village. (Easy)
- Orphaned Noble - As the child of a landed noble you enjoyed relative comfort off the backs of your subjects. This leisure was not to last, as you have just learned your father died in battle and you have inherited his estate.: Start with a random fief of your culture, mid tier gear, low influence, and a single companion that, while skilled, is really old. (Easy. Harder variants give a worse condition fief.)
- Exiled Knight - You served your liege loyally for many years until an envious rival seeking to steal your holdings fabricated evidence of your treason. You have since only narrowly escaped capture and execution, but your pursuers are still right behind you.: Start in a random village/town with upper-mid tier gear, but a high criminal rating in your native culture and one lord (randomly chosen from the faction's dishonorable ones) with a strong dislike of you. (Medium-Hard)
- Street Rat - As long as you can remember, you've fended for yourself on the streets as a pickpocket and gopher for the local gangs. You've recently "acquired" a fancy ring from a passing noble and have decided, rather than give the gang their cut, you'll take it to make something for yourself: Start with a dagger, a bag of rocks, rags, a single unit of grain, one unit of jewelry, negative relations with a random criminal type notable in your starting town, and a moderate criminal rating. Your skills are lower than standard except for roguery which has a sizable bonus, also you're also a child. (Hard)
