Allied combat behaviour

Well just downloaded this mod and it has a lot of cool features but the combat seems to be quite weird. Just now I joined my alllied attacking another force but my allied just keeps walking his line forward and back infront of the enemy and not engaging and neither does the enemy so both armies just look at each other. Also my archers seems to have VERY short range. So do I have to start the combat even though I joined my allied when he begun to fight or what is the deal?

Try this:
Attack a few men of the enemy and when they engage you fall back behind your allied frontline (shieldwall calded in these times). So you can try to force your allied to fight
