All books and what they're good for ?

Well I'm just standing in front of a Book Merchant right now and I have no idea of what most book do to your character. I ran a quick search in this part of the forum and didnt find any summarized info about this, although it might be in there somewhere. Still if anyone can bring his own bit of information we should be able to have a clean/easy-to-find topic about it pretty quickly I reckon. I'll edit this first post once all that info has been gathered.

PS : If such a topic/post already exist just tell me and I'll just go there of course.
