All about Smithing

What's interesting is this: Some people think it's way too slow and "painful" (whatever that means). Others think it's just fine. Still others think Smithing is actually game-breaking and needs serious nerfs (money-wise at least, not necessarily weapon stats).

Why such a wide-ranging difference of opinion on Smithing? I think it's because of RNG. There's a (very) few 2H sword & 2H polearm high-damage blade components (Falchion, Falx, War Razor, maybe a couple others) which are extremely OP. Once unlocked, they convert any smithy into the player's personal high-capacity coin mint.

These specific blades enable the high-damage weapons which sell for 60K in shops. Some of these blades don't even require high-end mats, plain Steel will do, or even just Iron. (the polearm Falx blade does require Thamaskene. But the War Razor doesn't). And difficulty doesn't matter either; you might take a little penalty, but generally too small to consider. Who really cares if a 150-damage weapon gets nerfed to a 148-damage weapon...the marketplace sure doesn't care, lol.

So if a player is lucky, one of these components might get randomly unlocked very early. That player is going to have a completely different viewpoint on the value of Smithing compared to a player who doesn't unlock one of these blades until later in the game...or perhaps never at all.
