AI for mounted units

Has anyone else noticed that the AI of mounted units merely serves to get them killed? They rush up to the enemy, then stop and start attacking. Usually resulting in them getting swamped and killed by inferior units. Would be good if mounted units used an AI scheme where they would ride by, attack while moving and then turn around for another pass.

You really have to make an effort to keep your horsemen moving. I do this by using a combo of the '1' (defend this area) '2' (follow me) and '3' (charge!) commands. I think they're a little less agressive in version .623 than in .622 though, which leads them to stand around and get attacked a bit more then they did in .622. I thought they were a little more effective in the older version.

What mine usually do is rush forward RIGHT at the enemy, run into them, hit them once, then sit there getting their ass handed to them by the swarm, not even trying to ride away. Be nice if they could be coded to ride at the outside guy, and pass a bit to his left or right, so that they can hit and keep moving instead of stop.

Also a problem is when mounted units go against mounted units. I put Marnid on a spirited courser with a great lance and steel shield (and black armor, etc) but he still dies miserably, because hes an idiot. If a mounted unit gets behind him, he slows down trying to poke backwards while the guy behind him is beating him down (and he cant even point his lance backwards). Be nice if they were made to speed up (his courser would be faster than their horse) and then turn around to rush them in the front. And against ground units he *never* uses his couched lance - he just rushes into the group, gets stuck by one of them, and stands there poking till they surround him and beat him down.

Ive noticed the same dumb maneuvers in the arena mounted units - they will run into a wall and sit there while you stand behind them beating them. They just sit there poking the lance as far back as they can point, which is not even close to you. Can also run up behind them with a 2h sword and horse and hack them up while they slow down trying to poke you with their lance, which cant reach behind them. And if your the guy with the lance you can run up behind the guy with the sword and he slows down and lets you poke him to death.

All of this is with AI set on good, so its not like I have it set on poor and want it to be bad lol.

The lance thing is a hangover from previous version when the lances COULD actually reach back that far - armagan just needs to re-code it so the AI realises it can't anymore.

i absolutely share the observations of themagelord. mounted units - even knights - die easily because of their lack of intelligence. in my opinion infantry/sergeants are more effective especially in large groups. the mounted AI needs improvement. it should avoid getting stuck between infantry or other obstacles at all costs. but with multiple moving targets this is extremly difficult to program.
anyway i love this game, its really addictive.

Yes, this has happened to me several times (AI setting = normal) and it's most distressing to have my knights charge into a warband and then make little effort to keep moving and not get hit from both sides, front and rear!

I think what happens is a promising target presents itself and the knight attacks ignoring the intended victim's nearby buddies.

What has worked for me is something similar to tylertfb post: issue commands to get the troops moving again.

It also works in our favor though: a mixed enemy party of horsemen and infantry appears. I command "Hold Position" and their cavalry is swarmed by my band before their infantry catches up. I usually ride ahead as this is happening and distract the foot soldiers with arrow fire. Then I issue "Charge" or "Follow me" to get my guys moving again.

The heroes Borcha and Marnid though (I love 'em) are so devil-may-care that they usually do what they want and wind up unconscious somewhere -commands or not.

I agree mostly but I had a few Vaguely Knights and I was only level 7. (got a lucky break after long suffering). I was trying to make the caravan run for the Zendar merchant and I got attacked by those Mongol rider guys. I thought I was doomed but my knight dudes tore them to shreds. It was fun.

Cavalry usually works fine against the khergit because they tend to operate in penny packets. Which means the knights don't get mired in a swarm and get a better use of their fighting power.

And with the khergit's relatively slow moving horses, the can play actchups without problem.

When fighting khergit, I offten saw one on a knight's tail, trying to poke it in the rear, white a second knight on his own tail doing exactly the same. Usually this don't end in the khergit's favor as the knights hit harder and pack more armor.
